CHATTANOOGA, Tenn (WDEF) – The Urban League of Chattanooga and The American Job Center have teamed up to bring more than 400 job opportunities together under one roof in an effort to get Hamilton County residents back to work.
This job fair comes just a week after Governor Bill Lee’s announcement that federally funded unemployment programs will be coming to an end on July 3rd.
With less than 2 months until federal unemployment benefits end, a job fair with several hundred employment opportunities couldn’t have come at a better time.
“We are here to provide an opportunity for folks who are looking for jobs who may have been displaced or lost their job during the pandemic to be able to find a living wage job, maybe change career or even grow in their area of careers,” says Cheryl Paris, Urban League of Chattanooga.
The Job Fair hosted over 50 employers who are all facing the same problem…finding employees who want to work.
“It’s been difficult right now but we are looking for skilled workers. We have seen a shortage of workers in the area recently and we are looking to hire quite a lot of folks at our facility,” says Madalyn Roberts, Human Resources for Roadtec.
Officials say obtaining and maintaining a successful job has more benefits than just a steady income.
“We know that as long as we have individuals that are working our communities strive. We see less crime, more beautification within our community, our kids are a little more disciplined in regards to making sure they take care of their responsibilities too,” says Damon Stewart, American Job Center.
