CHATTANOOGA, Tenn (WDEF) – Mayor Jim Coppinger and Administrator Becky Barnes hosted their weekly Covid-19 briefing.
During the briefing Mayor Jim Coppinger announced that he was pleased with how much progress we have made with vaccinations.
But the progress is not enough.
Officials are asking more residents over the age of 61 & older to get vaccinated.
81+ group is only 54% partially vaccinated while they account for 37% of the county’s deaths.
71-80 age group is 64% partially vaccinated and they account for 31% of the county’s deaths.
61-70 age rang is 51% partially vaccinated and account for 18% of the county’s deaths.
With recent hospitalizations increasing, Mayor Jim Coppinger was quick to point out that he will not consider re-extending the mask mandate.
“We did the mask mandate in July. It was the only advice we had. We did that in hopes of getting a vaccine and what we always had said was that the vaccine would be our light at the end of the tunnel. We are not there yet but we do have the vaccine we just have to get more people to take the vaccine,” says Mayor Jim Coppinger, Hamilton County.
Administrator Becky Barnes says vaccine hesitancy is a big issue for them and if you have any questions about the vaccine to call their hotline.
