Newnan, GA (cbs46.com) – There was one fatality after a tornado ripped through Newnan, Georgia Thursday night according to the Coweta County Fire Chief. The city is about 35 miles southwest of Atlanta and experienced heavy damage to the historic downtown and surrounding area.
Storms moved across the southeast all day Thursday. A tornado struck Calhoun County east of Birmingham, Alabama where five people died.
At least a half dozen tornadoes had been confirmed in Alabama, one in Mississippi and one in Tennessee as of late Thursday night.
