CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- Brittany Murphy got a very unpleasant surprise in the mail when she received her Chattanooga Sewer bill in the mail in January.
“I took my breathe away. I was really hopeless”, says Murphy.
To her surprise, there was a $600 adjustment and she had no idea where it came from.
So she began making phone calls.
After spending hours on the phone and making several requests, Murphy still had no answers.
So, she called News 12.
We were able to find out that the city of Chattanooga got a new billing system in 2019 and they have since been working to notify customers about past due payments.
The $600 adjustment was from a past due bill in 2016.
Murphy says that as a city resident, she shouldn’t have to contact her local news to get answers.
“You didn’t have trouble contacting me. I’ve contacted them. They can never tell me that. If that is so, then they need to say that to me”
The city has payment plans available for anyone who owes them money.
Murphy says that now that she knows what the adjustment is for, she will handle her business accordingly.
