ATHENS, Tennessee (WDEF) – McMinn County deputies exchanged shots with a suspect Monday night in the Riceville area, but no one was hit.
The confrontation started with a report about a suspect shooting at a relative and stealing a car on Highway 39 West.
Officers found Nick Nunley parked on County Road 73.
They say he pointed a handgun at them and drove off.
The chase led into a field, where Nunley got out and ran for it.
They say that during the foot chase, Nunley fired at them and two deputies returned fire.
He then found a bathhouse and barricaded himself in.
After a two hour standoff, deputies drove an armored vehicle into the building and took Nunley into custody.
One deputy suffered a leg injury during the entry and was checked out at the hospital.
“Law enforcement is at times very dangerous and life threatening,” said Sheriff Guy. “I am thankful that my officers used good tactics and are able to go home to their families tonight. The situation was resolved with the best outcome for all involved.”
The TBI will investigate the exchange of gunfire.
