Brainerd held off Pearl Cohn 76-73 on Wednesday in the state basketball quarterfinals in Murfreesboro. Kevin Halfacre hit a three as the third quarter was winding down to give the Panthers a nine point lead going to the fourth. The Firebirds tied the score at 71 with just under two minutes to play on a three by Miquan Tucker. With the game tied at 73 with just over a minute to go, Trey Owten got free for a lay-up to give Brainerd the lead. The Firebirds had a chance to try and tie the score with five seconds left, but Owten stole the in-bounds pass. One of 11 steals on the day for Brainerd. Owten scored 12 points, while teammates Kevin Halfacre and Laderron Freeman each had 16. The Panthers also finished the game 11 of 22 from three point range. Brainerd plays Wooddale at 12:30pm est on Friday in the semifinals.
