DAYTON, Tennessee (WDEF) – The Rhea County Sheriff’s Office is using Haley’s Law against an accused child abuser.
30 year old James Earl Alexander has been charged with severely beating a ten month old girl on Friday.
He was caring for her at the time, but when the child’s mother returned home, he fled.
Officers found him soon afterwards at the Dayton Walmart.
He fought the officers and ran across the street, where he was finally taken into custody.
The Sheriff says Alexander appeared to be under the influence of some substance.
He faces a charge of aggravated child abuse.
The baby girl is now in the hospital with bruises to her face, upper chest and a fractured hand.
Haley’s Law allows stiffer penalties if the injuries warrant them.
The Sheriff says Alexander has a lengthy criminal record.
He faces a $100,000 bond.
