DADE COUNTY, Ga. (WDEF)- North Dade Volunteer firefighter raising money for family of teen killed in crash Saturday.

This family was traveling from Louisiana to Gatlinburg to celebrate Thanksgiving. There plans have drastically changed after the weekend crash that killed a 13 year old girl.

Several Dade County crashes are under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol. The third fatal crash in less than 2 weeks.

“A hit to the whole family that’s coming from out of state.”

A 13 year old, Tellayjah Bethancourt, is dead after a crash Saturday afternoon.

She was in critical condition when EMS transported her from the scene at the Wildwood Exit in Dade County. Two Dade County County deputies performed CPR on Bethancourt on the scene.

Patrick Hickey says, “They came through our little Wildwood town so that means there are are part of this so when they come through so it’s important for people to step up and help out.”

On Saturday the 17th, A Ford F550 was traveling east on I-24 in the left lane with a vehicle on the rollback and another being pulled behind on the dolly.

Officials says that driver noticed traffic ahead was slowing down and he told officials that he attempted to apply the brakes, but the brakes failed causing him to his the family’s van.

The preliminary report says that this pushed the family’s van eastbound until the van struck a third vehicle.

The third vehicle hit a guardrail, came back into the road, and struck the rear driver’s side of a fourth vehicle. Officials say this happened almost at the same time the family’s van hit the fourth vehicle as well. The first vehicle to hit the families van sideswiped a fifth vehicle, a 2015 Jeep Wrangler.

The driver of the truck carrying two other cars,  47 year old Eddie Sanders, Dayton, TN, was injured and transported to Erlanger.

The other four drivers were not injured.

Most of the family is from LaPlace, LA.

A 2 and 9 year old were in the car as well, but were uninjured.

In the last two weeks, there were two other fatal crashes in Dade County.

Sheriff Cross told says, “Last Friday (the 9th), we had another incident where a tractor trailer and a Pick up, caused a fatality that day. It was rainy and a pretty gloomy day but today, the sun was out and it was a very beautiful day.”

Last Friday, the 16th, a truck driver accused of driving drunk crossed the median hitting another semi, killing the driver.

Hickey says, “Whenever it comes to a 13-year-old it’s a lot harder on everybody when you go up and see a child that has been hurt AC their family struggling, it is good to step up and help them.”

Sheriff Cross says, “This is the holiday season here at Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up. A lot more traffic on the roads so just be aware of your surroundings. Be vigilant out here on the roads.”
