WHITWELL, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Whitwell Fire Department says several firefighters were injured when they responeded to a residential structure fire on East Kansas Ave in the City of Whitwell.
It happened around 8:30 CST Friday.
Officials say the owner was in a building next door when the fire was reported.
The Whitwell Fire Department requested assistance from the Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department, West Valley Volunteer Fire Department, and Sequatchie Volunteer Fire Department.
Five firefighters were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Three Whitwell Firefighters were injured. One of them was kept overnight at the hospital for observation, believed to be suffering from smoke inhalation. That firefighter was later released. The other 2 were treated and released for minor injuries.
A Sequatchie Firefighter was treated and released for shoulder injury.
A Crossroads Firefighter was treated and released for a hand injury.
The cause of the fire has not been determined and no foul play is suspected.
