How our local school systems ranked in latest Tennessee test scores

NASHVILLE (WDEF) – The Tennessee Education Department has released results from last spring’s TNReady test results for schools and school districts.

The Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System (TVAAS) simply measures student growth year over year, compared to previous classes.

Education Commissioner Candice McQueen says “While we know we still have room to improve, we also want to celebrate the hundreds of schools in Tennessee that showed progress this past year.”

— 88 school districts met student growth expectations.

— 11 districts scored the top level growth in all subjects, including Sequatchie County in our area. They got top scores in all five categories, including literacy, math and science.

Here are how our local systems ranked, on a scale of 5-1, for student growth:

5 Athens City

5 Rhea County

5 Dayton City

4 Bradley County

3 Bledsoe County

3 Hamilton County (see separate story)

2 Grundy County

2 Meigs County

2 Polk County

1 McMinn County

1 Etowah City

1 Marion County

1 Richard City

Congratulations to our Rhea County School district who was named today as a level 5 school district. Congratulations also to our 3 level 5 schools: Rhea County High School, Spring City Middle School, and Graysville Elementary School. We are beaming with pride.

Commissioner McQueen said “Students and teachers are making encouraging strides on both TNReady and in their overall growth, and today’s results point to bright spots across the state where students saw across-the-board success this past year on the state assessment (the 5 rankings). We want to learn from those places as we also continue to improve.”
