CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Veteran Newsman Ray White was laid to rest on Thursday after died over the weekend at the age of 80.
Ray worked all over the country, but his colorful career included 3 stints here at WDEF TV.
He began in the late sixties and into the seventies.
In those days, he anchored the late news and also was the weatherman.
Ray would eventually do it all, reporting, filming, and then running the entire news operation.
His career bridged the gap between the original pioneers of television (doing live commercials during the news & using film cameras without sound) to the modern era of the 1980s with computers, graphics and satellite reporting.
His final run at News 12 paired him with Jerry Brown.
Ray left in the late 1980’s to head to WKRG in Mobile, Alabama, where he worked until his retirement in 2001.
He then returned to Hixson for his retirement.
We put together this 5 minute look back at his long career in Chattanooga. You can see the changes in technology & style over the years. Plus a lot of our local history.
