CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – A variety of agencies have now responded to a fuel leak on the banks of the Tennessee River in downtown Chattanooga.
Last night, around 6:30 PM, the Fire Department responded to reports of a petroleum spill at Citico Creek.
The creek flows into the Tennessee River near the Tennessee American Water Company and Chattanooga Rowing.
Now the Chattanooga Public Works, City Engineering, the Coast Guard, TDEC, HEPACO and even the EPA are helping out.
The have placed booms at the mouth of the creek to keep the oil sheen from spreading further into the river.
Fire department officials say that more than 1,000 gallons have leaked, but they don’t know the source yet.
However, the leak has stopped.
Tennessee American tells us that they are monitoring their water samples and have found no evidence of contamination so far.
They believe their water supply is safe, but will continue to monitor.
The Riverwalk has been blocked off at the point while crews are working there.
