DALTON Ga. (WDEF) — A Dalton counselor is behind bars, accused of sexual assault.
Dalton police arrested 63 year old Daniel Staats Friday night.
Police say Staats’ arrest follows a four-month-long investigation of allegations of inappropriate and illegal conduct with women under his care for court ordered psychotherapy counseling.
One of the women told investigators that in a counseling session at Helping the Hurting, Staats discussed sexual subjects with her, and told her it would be OK for her to send him photos of herself.
A second woman alleged sexual assault by Staats.
Police say she told them that during a counseling session, Staats asked her inappropriate questions and fondled her breast. She said Staats then exposed himself, and encouraged her to perform oral sex on him.
Staats is being charged with sexual assault by practitioner of psychotherapy.
Under Georgia law, it is illegal for psychotherapy practitioners to have sexual relations with people under their care.
