JONESBORO, Ga. (CBS News) — Police are investigating a deadly home invasion involving children in Georgia.
Officers found an 11-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy shot to death inside a house in Jonesboro on Saturday morning. The two were siblings.
Daveon Coates, 15, was one of the oldest children in the home. He and his sister, 11-year-old Tatiyana Coates, were shot to death during the home invasion. Police said they received the call from another child in the Jonesboro home around 5 a.m. on Saturday, CBS affiliate WGCL reports.
Police said the brother and sister who were shot to death were in the home with a number of children as young as 6 when an unknown number of people entered the home.
The children’s parents were reportedly socializing at another location at the time of the incident.
Police said they’re trying to figure out whether anything was stolen from the home in order to piece together a motive for the shooting. They’re actively investigating and haven’t released any sort of identification of the suspect or suspects.
A neighbor told WGCL-TV the family at the home was generally friendly to others in the neighborhood and to each other. He said he sometimes saw the kids outside playing basketball and would generally exchange pleasantries with them.
When he hears the people who shot two of his neighbors’ children to death is still out there, he just thinks of his own family.
The neighbor said the family has lived in the home for 2-3 months.
