CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee (WDEF) — What started as an afternoon bank robbery at the Trust Credit Union on Gunbarrel road quickly morphed into a chain of events that had law enforcement chasing two suspects.
According to Chattanooga Police officer Rob Simmons, shortly after 12 P.M., two men entered the Trust Credit Union to commit robbery.
“Both of those suspects were armed. They left in a silver SUV and traveled down Gunbarrel Road. During their flight down Gunbarrel Road, an officer observed the vehicle fleeing and initiated a pursuit of that vehicle,” Simmons said.
The Pursuit ended when the SUV crashed near the intersection of Jarnigan Road and Skyline Drive.
“Both suspects then fled on foot. The first suspect was apprehended by officers and K-9. A short while later, the second suspect was able to approach a citizen who was driving a Lexus SUV. He carjacked her and fled in that vehicle,” Simmons said.
According to law enforcement sources, the first suspect who was captured on foot is a 38-year old who is not cooperating with federal and local authorities. According to Officer Simmons, that suspect was caught with evidence from the robbery.
“He dropped a large portion of that money. We don’t know if that was all the money or just a very little amount.”
The FBI has now taken over the investigation while authorities continue to search for the second suspect who is considered to be armed and dangerous.
