CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – A new three mile section of the Tennessee Riverpark is now open.
The multi-million dollar expansion brought together hundreds of people to take a look and walk around the new scenic addition.
It was a day full of celebration as community leaders and members gathered to reflect on the continued extension of the Riverpark, fulfilling a promise made some 30 years ago.
“We’ve made it happen and it continues. People who come after are continuing to do it. You know it’s just a really different city”, said Senator Bob Corker.
The 16 million dollar investment to the new 3 mile extension to the Riverpark allows people access the city’s downtown area and leads to the city’s Southside.
“People who live all over the community can take advantage of this. And meet each other and bring family members down. it’s just a tremendous opportunity to walk”, said Rep. JoAnne Favors.
The Riverwalk offers wider paved pathways and chance to learn a little history as you walk through the Riverpark mobile app.
Along with the extension, those who come to Riverpark will be able to hop on bike and go along for a ride.
Four new bike stations will be added to the area.
Mayor Andy Berke said there is no doubt the expansion to the area along the Riverwalk will continue.
“We’ve seen a tremendous boom in the area around the Riverwalk. Down Broad street you’re seeing lots of development happening and part of that is they want to take advantage of the Riverwalk.
Mayor Berke said the Riverwalk expansion is still a work in progress.
“The next step is to get from where we are today all the way out to Lookout Mountain and we’re going to keep working to make sure that happens.”
The celebration continues tomorrow morning at 8am for a morning workout sponsored by BlueCross BlueShield
