CHATTANOOGA Tenn. (WDEF) – Final arguments from both sides were made tonight, in the case of 52-year-old Jaqueline Escareno, who is currently on trial for the death of 23-month-old Demarcus Bryant.

Bryant he died from a 25-microgram fentanyl patch that was allegedly placed on his back, while in Escareno’s care. But Escareno claims the patch must have accidentally transferred onto the child when she was carrying him from the bathtub.

“I’m tellin’ ya’ll, I’m being honest, I’m not accountable for this patch,” said Escareno during an interview with detectives that was played in court, “I put it on Friday morning, that’s all I remember. That’s all I know.”

Evidence was presented from both sides, but the most debatable was the 911 call between Escareno and detectives, in which Escareno can be heard mumbling something to herself after the detective puts her on hold.

“Lord I’m sorry. What did I do?” said Escareno.

Escareno decided against taking the stand to testify in court today, and the jury will begin deliberating tomorrow. As always stay with News 12 as this story develops.
