Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – A would-be alleged robber is dead today after being shot and killed by the person he was allegedly trying to rob in — what Police are calling — an Internet-date meet up.
According to the Chattanooga Police Department, Steve Hurston, 19, was shot and killed by Joshua Smith, 30, just after midnight Saturday.
Police say a 9-1-1 call came in from Hamill Pointe Apartments on Hamill Road in Hixson. When police got on scene, they found the robbery suspect, Hurston, lying on the ground unresponsive with the alleged robbery victim, Smith, holding him at gunpoint.
Hurston was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.
Smith told officers that he met a woman online and was walking to the apartment complex with her when Hurston came from beside the duplex demanding money and waiving a gun at him.
Smith told police that he refused to give the man any money, and that’s when he shot Hurston, who fell to the ground.
Police did not say if the woman was involved in the robbery or if the date might have been some sort of arranged robbery disguised as a romantic meet up.
