Sunday morning shooting; suspect questioned


Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – Chattanooga Police responded to a report of a shooting early Sunday morning at the 1300 block of Cowart Street, finding Reuben Simpson, 35, unresponsive and suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head. The victim was transported to a local hospital where doctors report Simpson’s injuries are non-life-threatening.

Officers secured the area and spoke with witnesses from the Bella Vita Restaurant, at which both the victim and a suspect, Cornelius Smith, 23, had been. Officers have contacted Smith and is being interviewed by Chattanooga Violent Crimes Investigators.

Chattanooga Police ask anyone with information regarding this crime to call 423-698-2525.  The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released when available.

CORRECTION: Investigators have determined that Mr. Cornelius Smith was not involved in the shooting which occurred in the 1300 block of Cowart St. Investigators are currently following all actionable leads.

  • Bella Vita security provided both a suspect name and picture.
  • Bella Vita staff stated they knew the suspect they were able to convince the alleged suspect to turn himself over.
  • The suspect was interviewed by investigators. But, investigators have determined the information provided was incorrect and the detained individual was released.
