Gun violence shakes Chattanooga Wednesday

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – Witnesses and police say a Lincoln Navigator was shot multiple times right before it ran an intersection, plowing into stopped cars on Brainerd Road Wednesday morning.

An hour later, a man was shot walking into his home on Tunnel Boulevard.

Are these incidents related?

Are these gang retaliations for Sunday night’s double homicide that left a 5-year-old without parents?

Chattanooga police say they are searching for answers to these questions.

“I was working on a vehicle and I heard BOOM BOOM BOOM and then I ran to the door,” said Jesse Skiles who works at an auto glass shop across the street from the shootings. “And as soon as I ran to the door I see this Lincoln Navigator with 12 to 15 bullet holes all in the side of it and he’s just going straight for all these cars. He runs the red light and he just plows right into these cars.”

Police say at approximately 10:45 Wednesday morning, the Lincoln was the target of these shots.

Eight cars were involved in the wreck and a pregnant woman was in the Lincoln.

This section of Brainerd was shut down for more than an hour.

“Any of the injuries that we know of are minor injuries that I’m aware of right at the moment and they are not related to the gun shot,” said Mark Frazer with the Chattanooga Police Department.

The police chief said there is no suspect information but the suspect vehicle may be a red Volkswagen.

Well, shortly after this shooting, police were called to the 1000 block of Tunnel Boulevard where 26 year old Ishmael Simmons was shot walking into his home.

Simmons was able to describe the suspects.

“Two suspects in a brown minivan supposedly drove up and fired a few shots from the window and then drove off.”

Police do not suspect Wednesday’s shootings were related but they are investigating a possible relation to Sunday’s double homicide.

They said there were many witnesses to Wednesday’s shooting on Brainerd and they are cooperating, one even ran to help.

“As soon as I heard the plastic crinkling and the metal crinkling I ran out to make sure noone was hurt. I don’t know what I would’ve done if the guy that was doing the shooting would’ve been out there, I don’t know what I would’ve done. I probably would’ve been hiding in the back in here.”
