Now we introduce you to this year’s first winner.
In Dade County there’s a special teacher who not only keeps her students’ grades on track, she gives them the shot of confidence they need for success.
Tina Roberts is this week’s Golden Apple Award winner…
In Tina Roberts classroom a group of 5th graders sing along to "School House Rock."
It’s not your normal civics lesson…but for Tina Roberts and her students it’s a typical day, "We seem to get along with each other and I’m a big kid…"
For 22 years Roberts has molded minds at Davis Elementary School.
She says it’s her way to make a positive impact, "I teach a lot of things, you know we teach a lot of academics. But I want the kids to know that I care about them."
Susan Brown believes that level of caring makes Roberts a truly great teacher.
Brown writes of Brown in her Golden Apple nomination letter, "She makes time for her students, makes learning fun and gives extra help if a students needs it."
Last year Susan’s oldest daughter McKeisha bloomed with that extra help.
McKeisha says, "I used to make bad grades, now since Ms. Roberts helped me I always have As and Bs."
Susan says, "(Ms. Roberts) just took the extra time and you could tell that after she’d been in here she was just a different child."
The change was so great Susan enrolled her younger daughter Yasmine in Ms. Roberts’ class. She says thanks to Ms. Roberts Yasmine’s confidence is already improved…
Yasmine says, "Whenever I see her she makes me smile and I don’t have to worry about nothing."
The Browns aren’t the only ones noticing good things in Ms. Roberts’ class…In fact Roberts was named this year’s Davis Elementary Teacher of the Year…
Roberts says, "Usually when you do something you’re not supposed to do that’s when you find out. But when you do something good, it’s nice."
She says a pat on the back is always appreciated…but the real reward is watching her kids learn, "They just make it worth while."
