2009 stimulus check
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on July 6, 2009 - 2:33pm.
Hello,
My husband and I file our income taxes as married, joint. My husband took an early retirement from the plant he worked at. He receives the 2009 stimulus as a $13.00 increase in his retirement check. I do not work but do some craft shows and earn around $2000.00 after expenses and do file this with our income taxes. Will I receive a stimulus check? If I am eligible, how do I go about getting it? Thank you.

2008 Stimulus Check
Submitted by Magdalena M. (not verified) on May 15, 2009 - 10:37am.
I spoke with an IRS agent who informed me that in order to receive my 2008 stimulus check I would have had to have filed a 2007 1040. I did not work in 2007. She then informed me that If there was no 1040 for 2007 that you will not receive a stimulus check for 2008.
Is this true? I do know people who didn't file last year and received a check. I am confused.

Submitted by Guest (not verified) on May 4, 2009 - 4:34pm.
Hi, im currently disabled and didn't work for the year of 2008. I filed using the EIC worksheet giving the option to have the IRS figure the amount(i'm sure a mistake). My concern is the main reason I filed was to get the remaining amount of my stimilus from 2008 and any possible EIC. I haven't had any update on either and am concerned because I can't seem to be able to check using their website seeing that I don't have an amount because I left that for the IRS to configure. Is there a direct way to get in contact or get a response from the IRS concerning this? Even the 1-800-# asks for my return amount. A number I have no idea on how to obtain. Can anyone help?

Submitted by Guest (not verified) on May 18, 2009 - 6:05am.
if you are disabled you still need to file your taxes. If you have a spouse that earned money and you file joint your disability it NOT taxed, if you file married separate then your income IS taxed, IRS says about 49 percent is taxable if you file separate. My first husband was disabled for 12 years and when I worked full time it was better to file joint that way his disability checks were not taxable.

paycheck taxes
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on May 18, 2009 - 6:15am.
Anytime you work they will take out taxes. Whether you get a total refund depends on how much you make this year. If you make enough to file (roughly $3200.00) the IRS will keep what is owed them. If you make less than the minimum then you will get a total refund of all taxes you paid through your paychecks. Look at your last paycheck of the year, if you made $3195.00 and they took out $55 in federal taxes you will get the full $55 back in your refund, but do not count the SSA or Medicare taxes, those you will not get back. It is better to file your taxes even if you didn't make enough to file. Because you will get all your tax money back at the end of the tax season.

Submitted by Ro (not verified) on April 20, 2009 - 10:27am.
I just filed my 2007 income taxes and I'm actually getting a refund. I was so excited the penaly wasn't very high that I didn't ask if I was eligible for the stimulas payment. (that all of my friends got last year.) Is it too late, if not what do I need to do? A friend said I should get it and it will be seperate from my tax refund. I was unemployed all of 2008 (laid off) and I also filed my 2008 taxes in which I owed. (I received unemployment benefits and didn't have taxed taken out, they are deducting this from my 2007 refund) My husband and I filed married filing seperate for both years, I carried our son for my 2007 taxes, and allowed him to carry him for 2008 since I was unemployed and he wasn't. Submitted by Guest (not verified) on May 18, 2009 - 6:01am.
YES, the IRS will keep ALL money you are entitled to from your taxes & stimulus checks. When it comes to outstanding student loans, they can and will garnish your wages if you are working. It doesn't matter if you have children you are trying to support yourself. They have been taking money from my taxes for a few years now. Once I got married again last year they took my husbands tax refunds & his stimulus check, he had to file a injured spouse form to get his part of the refunds & stimulus back.

Her medical expenses will be picked up by Medicaid, and she could be entitled to a number of free services. It will depend on how long she has been out of school and having these tumors.

Stimulus Check
Submitted by Confused! (not verified) on April 13, 2009 - 9:53pm.
Last year my parents claimed me as a dependent so I did not receive a stimulus check. I am no longer a dependent this year and assumed I would now get a stimulus check as some of my friends have in the same situation. However, when filing taxes, I was told that I won't be getting a stimulus check. Can anyone tell me why I won't be getting one even though my friends did? I'm a little confused. I was a college student for most of this year so I have a limited income. I also got married this year to a man who did get a stimulus check last year. Would that change things for me? Please help so I understand.

RE: stimulus check and child support
Submitted by Melissa (not verified) on May 11, 2009 - 1:58am.
If you know his social security number and how he filed, you may be able to tell if he got it.
The website is...
https://sa2.www4.irs.gov/irfof/IRServlet?app=IRACTC&selectLanguage=en
It's headline is :how much was my stimulus payment?
It asks 3 questions, which are:
Social security number.
Filing status:
Single
Married-Filing Joint Return
Married-Filing Separate Return
Head of Household
Qualifying Widow (er)
And number of Exemptions.
If you are not sure how he filed or how many exemptions you can just play around on it and guess, may take a while but it can work.
My Husband forgot how many exemptions we had so I had to try it 3 times, entering his social, how we filed and then tried 1 exemptions, and said incorrect info, then 2 exemptions, and same thing happened and finally the third time it worked.
Once you enter the correct information it will either say no stimulus rebate was received or it will tell you how much he received and how it came to that much, such as so much per spouse/child he claimed.
I hope this helps, any other questions I can help with, my e-mail is Mommy_uv_two@yahoo.com
GOOD LUCK, MELISSA

You could call your local child support office and they could maybe find out what he is getting back or if he is getting a stimulus check or not. Called the Recovery Rebate Credit. You can only claim the credit if you DIDN'T get a rebate in 2007. That's why your taxes would be lower if you put in that you never got any stimulus money before.

Is there a way to check how much I recieved for my 2008 rebate?
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on March 16, 2009 - 8:35am.
I know it sounds rediculous but I don't recall if I ever recieved my 2008 rebate.
When I check the IRS website it tells me that I recieved the full $600. However, it appears to more of a rebate calulator, not a records check of how much I actually recieved.
I contacted the 1-800 number for individuals with no avail. The automated message system didn't contain an option for my concern (I'm aware of how outragous it sounds) nor did it allow me the opportunity to speak with a "real" person.
Please, help. Thank you.

2009 stimulus is not the same as 2008 when they sent us all checks in the mail. Instead they are going to start taking less out of your paycheck in taxes, so you will earn slightly more per pay period. For example, you could see a 13 dollar increase per month. It all depends on your tax bracket and how much you make to begin with.

Then Call the IRS - they have a free help line and can give you free advice. You might have to wait for a little while since it is the busiest time of year, but they are the most helpful.
IRS Telephone Assistance for Individuals:
Toll-Free, 1-800-829-1040

You must have made at least: $9,350 if you are under age 65 or $10,750 if you are at least age 65. Did you receive a W2 or any forms from the university stating how much you paid for tuition or anything? Does someone else claim you on their tax return? You would want to file in order to get money back you paid in during the tax year, but if you didn't make any money at all during 2008 then it might not matter. I say call the IRS to get answers about your specific situation.

I saw this interesting publication when looking through the changes for this year and it's a way for you to see if you meet all the requirements. It's called Innocent Spouse Relief and it's publication 971. You can review the entire publication on line through the irs.gov website.
Innocent Spouse Tax Relief Eligibility Explorer at www.irs.
gov to see if you qualify for innocent spouse relief. Click on
“Individuals,” “Tax Information for Innocent Spouses,” and
“Explore if you are an Eligible Innocent Spouse.”
I was in a similar situtation back in the 80's and this would have been a life saver for me. Hope it works for you.

Filing together or separately
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on March 14, 2009 - 2:50pm.
A: It is often more beneficial to file jointly when you are married because there are special tax credits for married couples that can only be claimed filing jointly. It does, however, depend on your situation and it is worthwhile to do the numbers both ways and then see which comes out best. If your taxes tend to be too complicated to do yourself then I suggest a visit with a tax consultant to find out which wold be best for you because asking a question on the internet will not get you all the answers you need specific to you.
Filing separately usually happens when:
* One spouse wants to file taxes, but the other doesn't.
* One spouse is self-employed, and the other doesn't want to be responsible for any tax problems.
* One spouse owes taxes, and the other would get a refund.
* You are separated but not yet divorced.
But, there are many headaches involved in filing separately (both have to take itemized or both take standard, state taxes are a pain in many states, etc.) that I can’t even imagine the strangely specific scenario in which filing separately truly makes both financial and psychological sense.
B: A bit of advice not directly related to the taxes part - It sounds like your fiance doesn't just owe on student loans, he must have defaulted on paying those loans and now the government is taking it out of his taxes to ensure he pays because he was irresponsible in the past. Whatever happens, do not ever consolidate his loans with yours (if you have any) or add your name to his student loans. If something were to happen to him in the future and your name is on the loan in any way you will be responsible for repaying it. But, with student loans as long as he keeps it just in his name, if he were die before you you will not be responsible for repaying it. This is a specific aspect that makes student loans beneficial.
C: Getting money back at the end of year is not necessarily a good thing. It means the IRS is keeping money you did not owe over the year and they are collecting interest on your money. They are just giving it back to you after you file. Your goal should actually be to not owe any but get little none back if possible. That way you collect interest on your money over the year!

They will take your money. You have to file Married file separate or you will not see a penny. My husband owed money for child support and they took his money every year so my tax person advise me to file married separate. If you have an accountant or a tax person they should be able to help you. I strongly advice do not file jointly.
Hopefully Helpful

Is it too late?
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on March 12, 2009 - 10:10pm.
I still haven't received my 2007 refund yet because the I.R.S. screwed up on my parents taxes and they withheld my money. Every time I try to call a number I get the run around. I have called many different numbers and always get a machine. I am really frustrated and I am afraid that there is a time limit for receiving last years refund. I am preparing to do my taxes this year but am afraid that if I do they may not send me my old refund. HELP!

disability check 2009
Submitted by melissa (not verified) on May 11, 2009 - 2:13am.
The 2009 Stimulus is mainly for disabled people. My mother-in-law is disabled and she is receiving a "one time only" check of $250.00
I think this applies to all disabled people and people getting social security.
Hope this helps.

your not married
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on March 12, 2009 - 1:39pm.
if not married you need to file an amended return and each file your own returns. If you are married he has to file an injured spouse form saying these were your debts and he shouldn't be penalized for your debts.

I am sooo sorry, but your refund is gone. Since you filed a joint tax return, you are saying that, the money is both of yours. Since you owe money in default student loans that money goes straight towards the balance of the loan and every tax return you have will continue to do so until it is paid off. It doesnt matter that he wasnt your boyfriend in college the IRS has a red flag on your name for the default loan and any money going to you through the goverment will automatically be paid to the loan. In some instances these student loan companies can take money out of your bank accounts and withhold your paychecks. Best thing to do is contact the student loan company and set up a payment plan so they wont take any of these actions. But for the refund that you were owed, its too late. Just make sure you contact them immediatly before you lose any more money...
Hope this helps... Good luck to you and your family

Tax Credit for child
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on March 2, 2009 - 9:50pm.
Two of my children are full time college students but both work part-time and file their own taxes. Can i get a tax credit for them on mine and my husbands joint tax return? If so, how much? Thank you.
» reply | email this page
yes you can get earned income credit.
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on March 9, 2009 - 12:13am.
Yes you can still get the earned income credit for both of your kids. Tell the person who prepares your return they were both students. When your children prepare their personal taxes there is a question if anyone else can claim them as a dependent. They answer yes to this question. They will no longer get an exemption for themselves (usually this has no effect because there is no taxable income) and will get the same amount (what they paid in fed) back. If you do not prepare them yourself please make sure your tax preparer answers the questions correctly so you will get the money you are entitled to.
