Should a judge grant former sheriff Billy Long leniency by giving him less than the 10 year minimum sentence?

Have you folks at WDEF lost interest in taking polls or are you going to run this poll till Billy is released? Oh yeah and could ya turn down the volumn on those commercials. The news is so much better when you can hear it and the guy down the block quits knocking on the door telling me to turn down Mr. Clean.

And by the way, I don't think Billy Long should get off easy because he has no prior criminal record. That would be a slap in the face to the community for putting their trust in him in the first place.

Public officials are executed for this type of abuse of power and lack of concern or respect for their community...how many people did he lock up that may have been in competing for his vice I wonder.

You know Adolph Hitler loved dogs and children and wanted the best for his country. The problem was in his twisted mind he blaimed those that he wanted to, for his problems and felt what he was doing was o.k. and justifiable.
One of the most despeciable things a person can do is to violate the trust placed in them by the people that put them in office. This is pure greed and is only forgivable by GOD.

Long did take advantage of the power he had, but there are far more bad things that we need to worry about, and money will get him off with minimum time.
I think 5 years in prison and 5 probation will be enough, but then, i am not a Judge passing a sentance.
I do know that a family member did 1 stupid thing and because the lawyer fee was 12k, and not do any time, the public defender got him 2 years, with a mere 2k fee, money talks in our justice system, look at OJ Simpson.

He ought to be hung from one of those big oak trees on the courthouse lawn.

Anyone in public office who violates that trust should be made example of. Prosecution to the full extent of the law, and tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail, like the old days.

i dont think anyone should do a long sentence for drugs i have always stated that, i can not see locking up all these people for years an years on the taxpayers now if its a violant crime and the person is guilty not just because the d.a. wants a conviction violants is a differant issue, when i was growing up alcohol was illegal all we ever heared was if it gets legal it will kill all america,gees less people drink now than i ever seen, the real truth is if we legalized drugs people would do less really, it is legal in amsterdam they have less crime than any other country, what our gov, officials are doing is feeding off the federal tax dollar thats why law enforcement officers lie district attorneys go ahead an convict the innocent (but our gov, officials have not realized the war the high gas an food price the average taxpayers wont be able to foot the bill any more 12 bucks now is like making 7 bucks a year ago people cannot live on it now we have most of our hard working non violant citizens in jail an prison another scam to feast off the fed, taxpayer now remember police have to give tickets they too also feed off the taxpayers but keep in mind the only taxpayers are the average smoe and a lot of them are locked up you got to look at this also our gov, wants all our jobs global so that is another issue if we dont work how does the elected brotherhood going to live the great life he is now living off the taxpayers, this is all the true way it is now, I.L.M.A.O. He did the crime, he needs to do the time. He should get more time than the average Joe because of the responsibility of Sheriff is a leader. He let a ton of his peers down not to mention the hurt and shame he caused our community.

This would not be "making an example" of him. This would be making him pay his just dues for willfully committing the very crimes he would have arrested others for doing (unless they were in cahoots with him). The "no prior criminal record" cannot be trusted. How many times in the past has he done this kind of dirt and gotten away with it because it was covered up by cronies or payoffs? He was greedy and wanted to be some sort of kingpin as is evident in some of his threatening quotes in his indictment. Yes, he got caught up in the corruption, but in any position, from the lowest to the most powerful, people have a choice to do what we know is right and he chose to do just the opposite. You don't let your children get away with what they know to be wrong, why have a different approach with a full grown responsible adult?

I feel like he is not to be treated any different than anyone else, former sheriff or not. He should be given the maximum sentence, for what he has done, he is like anyone else & he definitely knew better.

Sheriff Long made a terrible mistake. However, Chattanooga and Hamilton County are full of elected officials that have crossed the line, taken more, felt entitled, etc. The Sheriff was making great head way and had implemented several things that helped the community, schools, and officers. He had a good vision but was drawn into the corruption and lost sight of his goal and appointed duties. He does not deserve favoritism but he does deserve the same leniency others would receive. Justice demands taking responsibility but justice is also balanced and unbiased - don't make him the 'example' to prove a point and don't allow the justice system to be used as a tool for personal revenge.
