Trucks-Only Lanes

kThe Georgia Department of Transportation is proposing one idea to break the gridlock, creating truck only lanes.

So what would happen if they had their own lanes?

Truck Driver Ann Brackett says, "If they could keep the four-wheelers out and then we could go on and meet our deadlines and it would be a whole lot easier."

Traveler Carol Faragson adds,  "I realize that they require more space than we and they have problems with their mirrors and I think if they have their own lanes it would improve the quality of travel for all concerned."

Truck driver Paul Perkins says it may stop some of the accidents.

"The truck drivers we can't stop quite as fast as they can in cars for one thing...they're getting in your blind spots on the side of your truck...you run over them before you even know their there," Perkins said.

A spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Transportation says 940 million tons of freight moved across Georgia's highways and interstates in 2004.

By 2035, that number is expected to double.

With that fact, Paul Perkins has reservations. He wants to see more than one truck-only lane saying, "They put us on the first two lanes which make it bad..they need to give us the two outside lanes..because they keep coming on and moves us backwards and forwards...we shouldn't be forced to stay in the right lane."

The Georgia DOT says the plan is to add lanes, not take over existing ones. They expect a study on the idea to be complete later this year.

The DOT will hold several statewide meetings to get comments on the truck-only lane idea.
