Adult Literacy and GED Classes In Georgia Face Huge Setback
Comments Below: 5
Adult literacy classes throughout Georgia could face a big setback.
The state senate will soon vote on a budget cut that could shut down adult literacy and GED classes for at least the next two months.
Here are the details...
If passed, the budget amendment would cut $1.8 million dollars from the program.
That would result in a furlough of 246 adult literacy instructors throughout the state.
95,000 students would not have a class to attend.
That means Northwestern Technical college classes would be shut down in two weeks and instructors will be jobless.
Hundreds of students currently enrolled would have no class to attend for the next two months. Instructor Marianne Weddle worries more about what her students will do if the classes shut down...
Marianne Weddle, Northwestern Technical College "most people that come through here have been through a lot of hard knocks, and, they look at this as their second chance. Sometimes, just to walk into the
classroom when they did took a lot of courage for them, and, I have concerns that, by not being here for them, we may lose this group of students."
School administrators are down at the state capitol, trying to convince lawmakers to continue funding the program. ![]()

Adult Literacy and GED Classes In Georgia Face Huge Setback
This is really sad. Georgia seems to be failing where govement help is needed, not only in education but also in healthcare (PeachCare and now GED classes). Not sure what can be done, but something should be ~ before all this gets worse and more and more goverment funding help is thrown out the window. Sincerely, Concerned...
State Senate Budget Cut - Adult Literacy and GED Classes
Cutting fundings for Adult Literacy and GED Classes (ALG) would cause a huge impact on the lives of so many adults and their ability to function in a world that changes almost at the rate of a new computer. This, two month, change could impact generations to come of the smae struggle in literacy. I think cutting the budget now in the Adult Literacy program is not beneficial, to the state, in provide funding for the program in the first. It would only result in recreate the problem.
We need the continuous funding for ALG program to succeed.
Thank you for the opportunity to voice my opinion.
ged classes
Ged classess should stay. Because if it was not for the ged classes I would not have gone up in math and the other classes
