Part two of our look at free things you can do this weekend leads us to the Smithsonian's annual Museum Day [1]. This is an event I take part in every year. Why? Because a family of 4 can save upwards of $60!
Every year, the Smithsonian offers an encouragement to the public to visit a museum. If you visit Washington, D.C. that's easy, since the Smithsonian facilities are free. So, in the spirit of spreading access, Smithsonian affililiates offer free admission, with a special card, once a year.
Here's what you do, follow this link and fill out the form [2] to receive a printable admission card for two people. If you're family is bigger, have your wife or husband also fill it out. Take the admission card with you to a participating museum, go to the ticket counter, and viola, you're in for FREE!
Last year, my family visited the U.S. Space & Rocket Museum in Huntsville, AL. It was a great day trip, with a stop in Scottsboro to hit Unclaimed Baggage. This year, we may go to High Museum in Atlanta [3] or the American Museum of Energy and Science in Oak Ridge, or somewhere else. You can find a complete list of participating museum's here [4].
Just remember to print out the admission card and take it with you. A simple step, but it's a must. You can't just show up Saturday and ask for free admission.
Enjoy!
P.S. Thanks to whoever asked the YMCA to turn one of the TV's to WDEF News 12. I noticed while taking advantage of free Y week [4], which continues for a couple more days.
