Dalton voters will decide if the city's recreation tax will remain at one mill come November.
The City council voted to put a referendum before its citizens.
An ordinance on the books from the 1950's mandates the recreation department must have one mill of property taxes.
Mayor David Pennington says if the rec department can't use all that money, it just piles up.
Pennington says,"Most of the people who live here now didn't vote for it then, a lot of things have changed over the last 50 years so I think it's important for the people to understand what this means if you continue to subdivide one mill of city tax to one specific department."
Pennington says Dalton is one of two communities in the state to have such a law.
