[0]I smile, like many people of my generation, at the newfound enthusiasm for alternative energy.
The kids today act like Al Gore invented all this in his movie.
I certainly don't want to squash their enthusiasm, but we have been through this before... during the 70s.
In fact, Chattanooga was on the cutting edge, thanks to our TVA connection.
Back in the early 80s, nuclear power was getting expensive.
So the agency researched alternative ways of making power.
And that led to the Solar Technology Research Center in Chattanooga.
[0]In 1983, WDEF ran a series of reports on the promise of Solar Technology at the center.
The theme was that in a few years, this would all become practical.
So where did it go wrong?
News 12's Bill Mitchell is looking into that question in a new report.
So I thought I'd post the three stories this was built around.
The reporter is Esmee Murphy.
[0]Part 1: The Promise of Solar Power
"In 5-10 years, the cost will be under $10,000"
[0]
[0]Part 2: Solar Power in the Home
"you can cut your electric bill by 50%"
[0]
[0]Part 3: The Solar Power Cell
"photo electric cells will allow all of us to make our own electricity"
[0]
Watch these stories, then watch Bill Mitchell's Update.
And then ask yourself.
What failed us?
The technology... our leaders.. or just our interest in finding cleaner energy? (vote in our poll [0])
Maybe today's younger generation will be ablt to fix it.
