This is the first day of a very long year if you routinely drive through Knoxville. You can expect detours and orange cones for the next 14 months... At least. So how is it going on the first day? W-V-L-T's Steven McLamb joins us live from Knoxville with a first-hand report. A traffic signal malfunction down the road at summit hill backed up traffic for miles to cherry street during the morning rush. But take a look now and everything is flowing much smoother TDOT officials repaired the light that was red and refused to change color. They say they will continue to watch traffic flow, and adjust signals as needed. For some motorists, the new changes are going to take some getting used. Commuter Jonathan Israel: " I had to go around 6-40,, all the way around... Way out of my way. It takes a lot longer... go to get up a little extra earlier." Reporter: But are you patient?" Israel: "Don't have a choice do I?" T-Dot officials say the traffic around town is doing well.
We put it to the test. Last week one way around 6-40 took 13 minutes. I made it today in 12.
T-DOT is posting plenty of information on their website on how to get around the project. They have maps.. Cameras and directions for people coming from Chattanooga. Here is the link to the I-40 Project [1] Page.
