Wine Law Reform Group Triples Membership in Tennessee
Comments Below: 9
A group pushing for wine sales reform in Tennessee has doubled its membership over the last three weeks.
The Red White and Food campaign now boasts 11-thousand members across Tennessee.
The group was formed by grocers who want lawmakers to approve wine sales in their stores.
A committee will hold hearings on the bill next week.
All this week.. Our online poll has asked whether you want lawmakers to allow wine sales in grocery stores.
And most of you say they should.
However, we're hearing more from liquor store supporters now, who have cut into that lead. They say changing the law would shutdown family owned businesses across the state.
You can still vote in the poll in the left margin and check out the latest comments at the bottom of this page.
TN is just a backwards place
I beg to differ with you. My ancestors can through Tennessee in the early years of this forming nation. Having moved to Tennessee in 2004, I have seen nothing to indicate that this State is backwards. There continues to be expansion of new homes, industries, road improvements to mention a few. The new VW plant will expand the just in time businesses to provide parts and other assemblies required by its main assembly plant. There are other industrial expansion in Bradley county as well. If work is important start now to get the skills needed to become a part of these industries. No Money you say, there is financial assistance for those who choose to seek it. Backwards in founded in those who choose not break the bonds of a mentality that the
government will care for our needs.
I was in my fifty's when I was told I was raised well below the poverty level. I didn't know of such a thing. My brother, sister, and I always had food to eat, a warm home, and clothes on our back. We had a mother who was always there when we came home from school, and a father who worked hard to provide for us all. This parental mentality can from our ancestors and continues to this day. I say again, Tennessee is not backwards, only those whom choose to not advance in life are those we all must encourage to reach out and grasp the opportunities our State and Nation present each of us.
No, he or she is right. TN
No, he or she is right. TN consistently ranks as one of the bottom five states for every positive indicator. The only time you hear TN ranking in the top of anything is in a category labeled: worst healthcare, drivers, education, or lowest incomes, test scores, literacy rates, or highest obesity, crime, and pollution. The only other states that rank worse than TN are states that border TN.
Wine Sales
Prohibiting wine sales in Bradley county does not stop a person who drinks wine from buying it, it forces us to spend our money and the tax dollars in another county.
It doesn't bother me to drive to Ooltewah to buy wine, it's a nice drive there and back. But the tax revenue that is being lost by this county by me purchasing it there, is a shame. People are in denial if they think we are drinking less, we are just spending our money elsewhere and drinking the same amount. Or better yet, causing us to drive to a restaurant and drink there, and then getting behind the wheel to drive home.
Why do you think you are paying 9.75% sales tax on your purchases.
Get with the times Bradley County, if they passed the law I personally would open a wine store here. It would make a ton of money
It is not fair
The people who are fighting to stop the wine sales in Krogers and Walmarts, need to join together to stop the sale of single consumable cold Beer in cans and bottles.
Only one purpose to allow a cold single can or bottle of beer to be sold at your local gas station...To drink it now like a coke or Pepsi.
So when you attempt to fight this make sure that something is done to prevent that repeat DUI offender without a drivers license to not be able to get a single service can of beer after he fills up his car and drives away to kill another mothers son.
So in those stats requested by "Members" in his story, lets add a comparison of how may DUI related deaths and injuries resulted from wine verses Canned or bottle beer.
"Membership" - meaning?
Did these new "members" pay dues? Attend a meeting? Or did they fill out a postage-paid postcard from a display placed in a grocery store? Which grocery stores got the displays and which ones didn't? What was the per capita income of the zip codes? Where the displays placed in gas stations - where most new wine outlets could be created? What do these people have to do to maintain their "membership"?
Sorry to be asking the press such questions, but there is always more to a story than what a lobbyist press release tells you.
Wine Law Reform
You obviously work for a liquor store or an owner of one.
It's only recent that one is able to even purchase wine in TN. Only moving to TN a few years ago...i had to drive over 20 miles to the nearest liquor store.
In most states one can purchase wine and beer in any grocery store. Leaving the finer spirits to liquor stores. New York and New Jersey are perfect examples and the little guy is still in business.
New York
You CANNOT buy wine in a grocery store in New York state. It is one of 19 states that does not permit that.
I’m not that much against wine in the grocery store. I do think the people promoting it are using dishonest tactics. Promoting a phony buzz is just one. I’ll give you two more examples. One, they are pushing convenience. Notice they say nothing about price. That’s because it won’t be any cheaper. I think a lot of people think that would be the case, but it wouldn’t. By failing to point that out, the grocery store folks leave some of their supporters with a false impression.
Here’s another one. You can only get one liquor license per individual or corporation in Tennessee. And all owners of a corporation must be Tennessee residents. When the grocery store crowd finally figured out wine would do them no good if they had to obey these laws, they had their puppet in the legislature introduce bills to simply delete these requirements. So the liquor stores, which have been prohibited from forming chains for 75 years, would suddenly be thrown into competition with Wal Mart and Publix, which have been chains from the beginning. Now the grocers think this is fine, since they would have a huge advantage, but it doesn’t sound fair to me. In states where liquor stores and grocery stores coexist, liquor stores are allowed to have chains, which evens the playing field somewhat.
Phony Buzz
Wow! Just Wow. Out of a population of 5,962,959 (2005 census estimate) they managed to find 11,000 who want to buy wine in the grocery store. That’s less than two tenths of one percent of the state population. Want to bet most of them are EMPLOYEES of grocery stores? There is absolutely no interest in this at all outside of Kroger and Wal Mart who want to hijack wages being paid to Tennessee workers and send it to Cincinnati and Bentonville, Arkansas. Why do you post propaganda from these people on your web site?
