With exterior work nearly complete on Volkswagen's new automotive plant, the company decides now's the time to build it's workforce.
Hans-Herbert Jagla, VW Human Resources, says "we are right on track with our construction, our car, our suppliers and we are on track with the people."
Volkswagen will begin accepting applications October 26th for 1,200 production team positions. Applications will only be accepted for three-weeks and can be filed on-line at vwjobschattanooga.com, or through any Tennessee Career Center.
Ryan Rose, GM of Human Resources for VW Chattanooga, says "the starting pay will be $14.50 an hour but then that grows to $19.50 an hour after 36 months." Applicants for production positions must be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED.
"The assessment process really is very thorough. We'll have technical tests, we'll have a production simulation and actually put them in front of a car and really experience the job and of course finally an interview face to face with Volkswagen staff," says Rose.
These team members will assemble automotive parts and operate tools and equipment in a fast-paced, high-tech production environment.
VW will give local worker hiring preference, even though many area residents don't have prior experience building cars. Rose says "they'll actually go into our Volkswagen academy and we'll teach them how to build a car the volkswagen way, because we know when we came to Chattanooga we'd get the people we wanted, but they didn't have experience to build cars."
Volkswagen will begin filling these positions in early 2010. VW will not start reviewing applications until November 16th, meaning there's no advantage to filing on day one versus day 21.
Health Insurance, Vacation, Benefits

At $14.50 an hour I hope they are providing a wonderful health insurance family plan. And plenty of vacation time and several other benefits that will help to get the dedicated team of employees they should be looking for. Additional compensation by another description is almost a certainty assuming they don't want a union organizing. If you do not play well with others you need not apply. You can bet VW's number 1 goal is to hire employees that work well with others. They can train almost anyone but like in the military you get more accomplished with team efforts. Good Luck to all that apply.
Thanks to WDEF TV 12 and Collins Parker for this section on your website for helping give these fine potential employees a chance at what maybe a great job.

My experience going through
My experience going through the hiring process at Toyota is exactly the process Volkswagen describes. As long as you are not an idiot and can pass an honesty test, don't quit during the work simulations, and can pass an interview and drug test; you have a good chance of getting hired.
For the age (over 55) questions, you do not want a production job. Toyota placed a few older folks on the assembly line, and they got their butt kicked daily. Toyota hires them to fill their quota. The old guys stay even though they can't do the job, because they have too much debt.
The work simulations were great! The heat was cranked up to 85 degrees and we loaded rims on a board and shot lugnuts for two hours straight. Then we went on to other physically demanding jobs. People dropped like flys. That's when I knew I would get hired.
Toyota was a very physically demanding job. I would expect the same from Volkswagen. Unfortunately, the pay scale is $10 an hour lower at Volkswagen. Very dissapointing. Hard to keep the UAW out paying chump change.
Good luck to everyone applying. Don't take on a lot of debt if you get hired on like the Toyota workers did. They are filing bankruptcy now!
