Volkswagen AG is ready to start hiring for its new Chattanooga assembly plant, starting with about 50 jobs related to purchasing and the start of construction. VW spokeswoman Jill Bratina said the automaker will seek applicants for the "very specialized" jobs in weekend newspaper ads. Bratina said Volkswagen is focused on first hiring about 50 people for "purchasing...suppliers for construction and other elements" for the $1 billion plant. She said from those applicants the company plans an Aug. 6 "invitation event" in Chattanooga. Bratina said Volkswagen also plans an "open house in the middle of September" in Chattanooga. She said the company then will begin taking resumes and applications and meeting with prospective suppliers. Production at the Enterprise South industrial park plant is set to begin in early 2011.

20 years ago 16.50 was a very good pay for someone who probley didnt even have an education. I worked for a Honda plant an the problem is these people start making desent money an they go out an buy new cars, big homes, boats, motorcycles, ect. then when something happens they cant pay for them. I have seen this many times. People need to learn to manage there money an stop trying to live beyond there means. Be thankful for the 16.50 an hour you get paid with probley a 9th grade education.20 years later look around can your dad find a job paying 16.50? What has he done to continue his education an better his self? Stop feeling sorry for yourself VW didnt ruin your lives your dads way of managing his money did.

VW ruins local economy
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on August 27, 2008 - 12:02am.
Volkswagen ruined our lives in Western Pennsylvania when they left in 1988. They went because they could get cheaper labor in Mexico. My parents never fully recovered since they left 20 years ago. Many of the kids I knew whose parents worked for volkswagen ended up divorced or moving away. My dad has done the best he can taking jobs and is now a few years from retirement age. When VW closed he was making $16.00/hour. He has never made that much since the plant closed in 1988. Now, 20 years later we all still hate them and you don't see us driving VW's though we owned three in the eighties. We were proud to say "my dad built that car." Good luck to all who work there in Tennesee. You are going to need it!

What a completely idiotic statement. To state that you, your parents, the city, and the state benefitted from all of the days and years that VW brought sunshine to you, and now to cry about the cloudy days since VW has left is bizzare. Thank God that VW was beneficial to you, your family, and the citizens of your area as long as they were. I'll simplify for you..don't cry over spilled milk, be thankful that you were fortunate to even have milk to spill.

Submitted by Guest (not verified) on October 15, 2009 - 11:06am.
They left not to "make a profit" but to make more profit. I have worked within the highest managerial positions at a Japanese facility in Tn. I can tell you that we received bonuses for every dime we could squeeze out of those poor people on the line. If you only knew how much they can afford to pay a worker and still make a high threshold profit margin then you would be slow to make statements as you did. Your statement was one delivered from envy of what they used to have, not of logic. Those people were totally screwed over from a company they trusted. They have every right to be bitter about it. I would say it is similar to a man telling a girl he loves her til she gets pregnant then he leaves. He said what he needed to say to get her to give him what he really wanted. I feel for those people.

"Volkswagen ruined our lives in Western Pennsylvania when they left in 1988. They went because they could get cheaper labor in Mexico." . . . "When VW closed he was making $16.00/hour. He has never made that much since the plant closed in 1988."
They didn't leave just because they could get cheaper labor in Mexico. They left because at the labor rates they were forced to pay, they couldn't compete in the marketplace. No matter how you look at it, a company has to make a profit or it goes under. A lot of things are beyond your control . . . raw material costs, energy costs, what the customer is willing to pay, etc. When your paying your workers a wage that after 20 years of inflation is still a decent wage for a factory worker and you're forced to cut cost . . . and there are folks willing to do the job a whole lot cheaper somewhere else, whether it's Mexico, China, B.F.E. or Chattanooga, you pack up and move there. When we demand high wages and great benefits, but aren't willing to pay the price at the store, our jobs leave.

I like the fact companies
Submitted by cade (not verified) on September 4, 2009 - 12:56pm.
I like the fact companies can move to China because everyone loves communism. Don't you agree? Just ask the Korean and Vietnam vets. We could argue about Germany and the Nazi past but we conquered them. Consequently how much profit does a company have to have? Something in Chattanooga was probably given to them for free. High profit in Japanese plants is only because no union or really high wages. They sell their cars at a considerably higher retail price than Ford, who by the way, didn't get taxpayers "Bailout" money and have decent wages and benefits. Just thank all of those Americans in the late forties and fifties that helped rebuild those war torn areas and showed Japanese newer manufacturing concepts. Ever go buy a pair of sneakers for a $100.00 only to find out it cost them maybe $5.00 to get to market. I love capitalism.

Submitted by Guest (not verified) on September 2, 2008 - 6:27pm.
you're an idiot if you blame a company for ruining your life. People who work in car plants are overpaid and spoiled, when they get released they feel like its the end of the world. Work hard go to school and move up and get paid more that way. I work in a chrysler plant, so I know what its like to be overpaid and spoiled. But thats why you save up your money and go to school when you're finally let go and do something better with the rest of your life.

Over paid and spoiled?
I am assuming you are in a managment position or a non union person(SCAB).
Auto workers are not the reason companies make such moves.Greed is to blame a company makes a little money and then they want more and more.
Support your auto workers and stop building companies up they do not care about you.

I work in an automotive plant too and I know how much stress I deal with on a daily basis, along with the shift work & "Flexible business plan" of which is ONLY flexible toward the companies advantage...never the "Associate".

Submitted by Carri (not verified) on February 15, 2009 - 2:52pm.
I work as a Temp part time employee but last year I was one of the full time temps on third shift. I was making big bucks. I have been working at Chrysler for over 3 years. I love the place. I may only be a temp part time enhanced employee for the uaw I am happy. I worked at Motorola in harvard Illinois for over 9 years I was a regular employee. They shipped my job to mexico. But Motorola trained me in electronics.I have an associates of science degree along with electronics training and college classes. But I work at the school district and at Chrysler. so I am able to work other jobs that helps. Yes these uaw employees are spoiled believe me, I work with them. but most of them were born into it. I am only wishing to get my kids into the uaw or I will try to work at another auto plant if they let me go. You almost have to be born into one of these jobs or have a technical degree. to those people who are laid off you need to get some technical education.

As a twenty-six year veteran at a japanese auto plant in Tenn. , let me say this.. for production worker, if you can put screws in a hole reeeeal fast and are at least as intelligent as an eight year old, you`ll do! Look kid, don`t waste your body and mind being a factory worker if you have a choice in the matter. You`re only young once. Look out for 30, 40, and 50 year old Robert now, He`ll thank you later and you`re bound to meet him. Make the most of your life. This may lead somewhere but, you`ll hate it and what you`ll have to become to make it pay.

If you read over these comments, most of which are job information requests and pleas, I am amazed at the general errors in the sentences, spelling and grammer. Let us not reason with the purpose of the comment box is too comment on the article and story and not a direct job placement service. God Help us.
"love ot come home" should be "to". No caps in the paragragh.
"employment" should learn how to spell his career, "electrontic".
"I have worked for my dad" sells should be sales and can't spell "CHATANOOGA".
"intrested in working for volkswagon". Well I find it hard to believe she has lived in "Michiagan" since she can not spell it.
Chances are these folks are asking here about the jobs because they lack the education or, as "intrested in working for volkswagon" says, "experince" to complete the job application process as been all over the news in the past few weeks.
With Limited jobs, we need a better bunch then these. Please take no offence to my comment.
Most of these posters should run down to the nearest Tennessee Career Center and get the job finding skills needed to be able to compete with the literally hundered of thousands of applications that will be processed over the next few years to fill the 2000 jobs.

Hiring
Hello, Chattanooga, on behalf of VW I want to tell you how happy we are to be here in your GREAT city. After reading some of your posts we have decided to hire only illegal aliens. Now I know most of you will be very angry with us for taking this position, and we do understand. However we feel it is in our best interests because we EXPECT them not to have command of the english language as they are after all foreigners. You however are not. Why don't you go back to school, learn your own language, learn to spell and then we will see what we have available. In the meantime, keep your heads up and pray for a better tomorrow. Regards, Weiner Von Schlauss
