A church on Lee Highway serves as a screening room for the latest creation from some local students.

It is a documentary called "I Are Genius," created by students at Tyner Academy.

"It's pretty much about the Hamilton county school system, no child left behind, just some of the pros and cons of each, and it's from a student perspective," explains student Micah Horvath.

The students came up with the story idea.

They researched it, wrote the script, and did all the shooting, and editing with the help of instructors from the Association for Visual Arts.

Emily Bowman is an Instructor with the Association.

"The project is essentially the kids. You know, the instructors, we were just there to help facilitate the students voice. We help them, we tell them, whatever you want to say, you know, this is your chance to say it."

Students like Damian Christensen hope the documentary shows that there's more to school than just getting good test scores.

"I hope that people will get a better idea about how we have, what we have to deal with in schools today."

The instructors from the Association for Visual Arts believe the project can lead these budding filmmakers to a future career.

"We have students that go on to study filmmaking, and documentary film making, or just video production. So for us, it has an incredibly lasting impact," notes Mark Bradley-Shoup, who serves as the Director of Programs for the Association for Visual Arts.
