The TVA board votes to seek a license for a new nuclear power plant for the first time in three decades.
Plans call for completing the two-reactor Bellefonte site in Hollywood, Alabama near Chattanooga.
It could take well over three years before construction starts.
TVA recently restarted a reactor at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant near Athens, Alabama, after a $1.8 billion five year renovation.
