Tennessee Lawmaker Wants Truth About Red Light Cameras

Legislation before the Tennessee General Assembly would prohibit private companies that install traffic cameras from receiving a portion of their fines.

Some lawmakers fear cities use traffic cameras as a revenue stream, instead of for safety.

The bill, sponsered by Knoxville Republican Tim Burchett, blocks local governments from sharing revenue from new traffic cameras after July first.

The legislation also requires existing traffic signals equipped with surveillance cameras to stay yellow for at least five seconds.

State Senator Bo Watson thinks this legislation was introduced to spur debate.  "There may be a bill that passes but I think in its final form will still give a lot of authority to the local governments to make decisions regard those types of devices."

Lawmakers plan to hold hearings on the matter later this session, and will invite city engineers to testify.

these cameras are nothing

these cameras are nothing more than a huge cash cow just ask the red bank post office how many money orders do they sell everyday for $50.00 and the will tell you a ton of them and like the sneaky van the has arizona tags on it did it pass emissions?

T-boned or rear-ended? The choice is obvious!

I fully support red light and speeding cameras and I certainly hope that revenue is generated by them. Basically, I see these devices as an appropriate way to tax people who don't obey the law.

I think people who get rear-ended because they panic when they see a traffic camera honestly do not belong behind the wheel in the first place. Fortunately for them, being rear-ended is probably the best way to get hit; most cars can absorb most of the impact from that direction. If you look at accident statistics, a t-bone is far more likely to kill someone.

Drive the speed limit, stop at red lights, and you'll never have an issue with a traffic camera.

Red Light Camera's

As I see it, a Red Light camera should only be used to help officers in court. As a Radar gun should be used. As they are used now the camera does the prosecution. In a misdemeanour violation an officer must witness said violation. If you have ever been sited for speeding where a radar gun has been used the officer testifies that he first saw a car speeding then used the gun to verify that speeding. Or he can say that gun read that a car was speeding and then he witnessed the violation. The red light camera should not be used by itself.

Red Light No No's

Study show while side collisions decreased rear-end collisions increased. I guess drivers just have to decide how they want to be hit. T-Boned or rear-ended?

Also, many cities that had these type cameras long before they were introduced have either done away with them or are conteplating doing away with them. Some cities have had class actions lawsuits filed against them when it was discovered these cameras had actually been rigged at some interactions to change too quickly from green/yellow/to red to enhance revenue. Seems the only people who support them are those invested in them or are getting something, some kind of kickback or something for having them.
