An elderly couple had to be rescued by boat when their Page Road home flooded. A little before 7:00pm Sunday night, Fort Oglethorpe Fire and Rescue got the couple to safety after floodwaters covered their home's porch. Firefighters had to carry the stranded woman from the home to the rescue boat. The floodwaters were moving so fast, rescuers had a difficult time keeping control of the boat in the several feet of floodwater.
The Battlewood Apartments off Battlefield Parkway also got evacuated because of flooding tonight. Three boats helped rescue people stranded tonight at the apartment complex, when the water reached the windows. Around 8:30 Sunday evening, officials cut the power to all of the apartments. It kept Fort Oglethorpe Fire and Rescue workers busy. Chief Bruce Ballew of the Fort Oglethorpe Fire Department said, "We have multiple areas that we have to go to. Single family residences, cars that are trying to cross roads with high water and are getting stuck and we have to go out and rescue them from their vehicles." Michelle Hensley was evacuated from the apartment complex. She explains: "I've seen people on bottom floors lose everything they own. Literally having to go stay in shelters and stuff like that. These apartments are just a bad situation in times like this." A temporary shelter was set up at Constitution Hall on Forrest Avenue for the displaced residents.![]()
