Southern Baptist Convention Takes Stance on Global Warming
Environmental Concerns and Global Warming are nothing new, but a major religious body taking a stance on them is....
A group of Southern Baptist leaders now say the denomination has been "too timid" on environmental issues.
Those leaders, including the president of the Southern Baptist Convention, signed a Resolution On Global Warming.
While the jury is still out on the theory of climate change, Southern Baptist leaders say the evidence is strong enough they can no longer sit idly by...
Pastor Tony Walliser of Silverdale Baptist Church says, "Whenever God put man on earth, Adam and Eve in the garden he said to care for it...so yeah, I think we bear a responsibility."
Silverdale is part of the Southern Baptist Convention and Pastor Walliser is part of a growing trend of people taking Environmental Issues and Global Warming seriously.
Nick Zeller of Chattanooga says, "There's disaster headed our way and we're not doing anything near what we should be doing to prevent it."
Concerned with the effects of pollution and waste Southern Baptist leaders have adopted an initiative on Environment and Climate.
Walliser says Christians have been leary of the more extreme views on environmentalism.
Thomas Mize of Flintstone, GA says, "If there wasn't as many people in the world we wouldn't have that problem."
Just last year the denomination questioned whether humans were solely responsibility for climate change.
Now leaders say the threat is too severe to wait for the smoking gun.
Pastor Walliser says, "As Christians we say 'We know our world, our lives. How can we conserve? How can we do our part in, you know, recycling or whatever it may be?'"
Convention leaders say they have a biblical duty to care for the earth.
Silverdale is playing its part to reduce energy use...switching to florescent light bulbs, turing off lights & computers when not in use, and changing thermostats.
The church has adopted an Energy Management Program including a guide for its congregation.
Many in the community support the Southern Baptist efforts...
Austin Jett is the Recycling Education Coordinator for the Orange Grove Center in Chattanooga.
He says, "In some ways we're beginning to see the effects of our actions as humans, therefore its our responsibility to take some action to remedy the situation."
Walliser says there is no one extreme answer.
He says all Christians should be environmentalists to some degree, "We have a moral obligation to care for the earth. One, because we love God. Two, because we love people."
The Southern Baptist Convention is more than 16 Million members strong.
It is the largest Protestant group in the US.
Your comments are great.
Your comments are great. That’s exactly the kind of thing I mention when people tell me there is no harm in religion. You focus on an afterlife and don’t worry about real life. The planet can be destroyed, for all you care, so long as a few more people believe the same nonsense you do.
Churches and Global Warming
It is only news that the Southern Baptist Church makes any kind of attempt at a stance regarding global warming or any other environmental issue because as a church/denomination they have been completely absent or even against conservation (stewardship) or care for the environment.
Please understand that there are many denominations, large and small that have taken real stances for years and even decades. There are more churches out there than the Baptists. They do not speak for all Protestants.
Study history, don't follow
all these liberal scemes about "global warming". This Earth, scientifically (with any way you look at it, Christian-science or evolutionary-science or whatever) HAS weather cycles that DO come back around. There are ten-year cycles, 100-year cycles, and even 10,000-year cycles. But they are there and no need for panic. (Actually, Nobel "prize" or not, Gore's argument over this "global warming" is now being not only disputed by ACTUAL scientists, but the DIRECT OPOSITE of what he has claimed to "uncover" is being presented as what is "really going on" which they believe is another "ice age" approaching.)
That said, no matter WHAT WE, as people/the human race DO OR DON'T DO...the cycles will come as they always have, they way they always will. Yes, care for the environment, but our little attempts to CHANGE WEATHER PATTERNS IN PLACE FOR CENTURIES and further back will not be of any use.
SBC and Global Warming
It is incorrect to keep reporting that The Southern Baptist Convention is taking a stand concerning "Global Warming". We are 16 million members strong and WE have not voted pro or con. Our convention doesn't even meet for a couple of months for us to be able to vote. It is a few ministers and leaders that belong to the SBC taking a stand - not The Southern Baptist Convention per se!
SBC & Global Warming
Ms. Ahrens - Thanks for your comment. I did try to be clear that leaders among the SBC were issuing the statements regarding global warming and the environment. I've revised the written article just a bit to make it even more specific.

more important matters
I am thankful that Ms. Ahrens clarifies that it is not all of the convention taking a stand on this issue. I would hope the majority of Baptist pastors realize they were not called to save the earth, but to try and lead the souls living on it to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is a much more important and urgent job than worrying about the planet earth, which is just going through natural cycles.
