Thanks to injuries, freshman Josh Odem got the start last night against ETSU. And the Johnson City native played well against his hometown team, scoring 14-points and getting three rebounds.
Said head coach John Shulman,"Josh odem had some pressure on him tonight. Josh odem, a Johnson city kid. All of a sudden, East Tennessee, is he going to try to do too much? He didn't try to do too much. 14 and 3. That's a pretty good night for a freshman."
Said Odem,"They played good. We played good. There was a lot of competition, so it felt good being out there playing against your home team."
With just over four minutes to play, Odem hit a three pointer to extend the Mocs lead to eight points.
"Well I tried not to be frustrated. Tried to keep it calm because when you get frustrated in the game, you start thinking a lot of stuff."
The 6'5 Odem weighs about 160-pounds, yet he had to battle in the post with the big boys.
Said Mocs guard Keegan Bell,"It's funny because he looks so skinny, people wouldn't think of him as a physical player. But he just gets out there. It's not even this game. The games before, he's just really scrappy. I mean this team was very physical.
From his position, playing three, he was playing really beefy, strong guys.
He was hanging in there with the best of them."
Reporter-"How do you make up for being frail Josh going inside."(laughter)
Said Odem,"It's just all about the heart, like he (Keegan) said. I know I'm frail, but I can play physical too. It's just the heart. You've got to have the heart to play the game."
