Police Taser Florida Student Andrew Meyer At John Kerry Event
TWO VIEWS OF THE TASER INCIDENT
We know a lot more now about the University of Florida student who was tased after disrupting a speech by John Kerry.
Andrew Meyer was released from jail on Tuesday, and isn't talking.
But his attorney calls the case an example of police brutality.
Meyer has a webpage dedicated to his political activism and his YouTube stunts.
This summer, when the Harry Potter book came out, he wore a sign in the street saying "Harry Dies" just to see what people would do to him.
But for the University, this story is no laughing matter.
After much criticism about how campus security handled the situation, They've suspended two officers and asked for an outside investigation.
University President J. Bernard Machen says he is requesting the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate the arrest.
"The thing that I regret, is that civil dialogue and civil discourse did not happen."
"Two officers that were central to the activity yesterday, have been placed on paid administrative leave. Pending the outcome of this external report."
A University of Florida student who was tasered and arrested at a forum with U.S. Senator John Kerry is scheduled to appear in court this morning.
University officials say Andrew Meyer got upset during a question and answer session at the forum. While as many as four police officers tried to remove Meyer from the room, he started to shout and was eventually tasered.
According to Alachua County jail records, Meyer faces charges of resisting an officer and disturbing the peace. Videos of the incident posted on several Web sites show officers pulling Meyer away from the microphone after he asks Kerry about impeaching President Bush and whether he and Bush were both members of the secret Skull and Bones society at Yale University.
A university spokesman says the university police will conduct an internal investigation on the incident.
Freedom of speech? Obviuosly
Freedom of speech? Obviuosly not....
That Kerry Just stood there and didnt intervene...yeah what a candidate for president you got there? Being Tazed????? What is that all about? He was handcuffed already when they tazed him and on his stomach, so he couldnt rally of been a threat....maybe verbaly but defintely not physically...also the first cop started dragging him solo out of the room and all of a sudden they needed 4 cops to hold him down???? At least drag him 3 feet further and dont do whatever u wanna do in fromt of people and cameras! The officers that were put on paid leave till the investigation is strange too. Hopefully this kid will at least sue their pants off and maybe a grand idea would be to sure Kerry for standing by and not acting during violence! I am sure there is a law about that somewhere.
Freedom, Yeah Right
Hey, listen.....
the quiet you hear, is our rights being stepped on
in the dead of night.
As for Kerry, if he can't step down off a stage to defend an innocent student, then how can he be expected to run this country as President. Kerry blew it.
For those who say he got what he deserved
Maybe the next time you're upset about something, you should get tasered. Some of you act like you've never made an outburst before. "Oh he had it coming," they say. Right. So the next time you're upset and want to be heard, just remember that you'll have it coming, too. Oh and take the tasers from cops. Apparently it is too much power for many of them. How many times do I have to hear about someone being tasered needlessly? Perhaps less than lethal wasn't the best idea, because it seems like some cops are just waiting for any excuse to pull the trigger.
What if you were next?
What if you had a question for Senator Kerry and this blowhard wouldnt move? What if you were next and he was taking your time? He was asked politely to move and then was pushed awaty by police. At that time he chose to resist.
I would want him thrown out or arrested too, because he asked three questions and they were all answered but refused to leave and allow others their turn.
He's a prick who got what he deserved. I should be tased too if I resisted the police like he did.
This is not entirely true.
This is not entirely true. His questions had not yet been answered when he was being removed. I do agree he should not have resisted arrest once the officers made it clear that, that was what was going to happen, but why was he being arrested. Everything states for disturbing the peace. Huh?!?! He was asking a question. Isn't that what you're supposed to do at a public forum????
Too much
I believe when Kerry said he'd answer the question they should have left the kid alone. Not to say that he didn't need some sort of reprimand, he did go over his allotted time, perhaps banning him from the next such event. But the taser was too much. I believe that the taser does have it's place in police work, but do worry about the frequency of which I'm hearing stories of it's abuse. I hope that the matter is cleared up quickly because this is certainly the sort of event that gets young people (and I'm 24 so I'm having to listen to my friends talk about this) up in arms about their rights.
Freedom of the what now?
Let's face it... as an American citizen in the United States at an open and public forum, he was a member of the press. He was exercising his First Amendment right to free speech and freedom of the press. It is a shame, however, that he had to react the way he did. Had he informed the security guards that they were hindering his First Amendment rights, they might have backed off a little bit. Unfortunately, he went about it the wrong way. What I cannot stand about this video is the students in the background; not one of them went to help their fellow man when a blatant act of police brutality and Constitutional degradation. Had I been there, I would have offered a citizen's arrest on the police. This entire situation could have been avoided if that millionaire of a liberal had just answered his question. Keep in mind, kids... it's not all about left wing vs right wing; it's the rich vs the poor. And guess which one YOU are?
Andrew Meyer
He got exactly what he deserved.
Cops were Right
I viewed the video of the incident and the police acted very professionally and responsibly during the incident. I also see the history that Meyer has with his pranks and thinking that anytime he is on camera is an opportunity to be funny and post it on youtube. At the incident, a normal person would have left the microphone after the time alotted and after the microphone was shut off. Meyer instead, continues to ramble on refusing to give the next student the opportunity to participate in the forum. At this point, he had the choice to leave when asked, or to be forced away from the microphone. He chose to be forced away from the microphone. These forums have rules and order like the rest of society. He did not follow the rules. No one cares that his question was likeable or not likeable, he did not follow the rules. The officers began forcing him away from the microphone because he would not walk away on his own. At that point, he was under arrest for disturbing the peace. Mr. Meyer is seen flailing his arms around to get away from the officers. Anytime officers tell someone to put their hands behind their back, or stop resisting, anything they do that is the opposite is called "resisting arrest." He only has to stiffen his arms or refuse to put his hands behind his back to resist. He went over and above that and was flailing his arms and I saw him push one officer away from him. He continued to resist, and the officers are not going to just punch him in the face, so they followed their protocol and used the taser which is not as invasive as a good punch to the face. The taser allows the officers to keep their distance from him and get him to comply when he is resisting. He got a good zap, and he deserved it. Now, he's on video and the joke is on him cause the officers are on paid leave and the video will be shown that they acted professionally and within their training. The loser, Meyer, will now be on youtube in a way he does not want, yelling for help like a wuss. He also will have a nice blemish on his record for the next time he decided to take an opportunity to be a celebrity because the camera is rolling. The police did a good job...a great job.
Souonds like you are from a Nazi state, not a rule of law state.
In these United States, when a suspect is on the ground and in cuffs, the use of a taser is clearly a "punishment" and not a way to control a "subject" - the "Subject" does not become a "Suspect" until placed under arrest. If you listen again to the tapes and video, clearly he was not placed under arrest. If he had been in a motor vehicle, he could have been "in a state of arrest" if they had used their flashing lights. But they did not. They man handled him to the ground, all in good order, but after the cuffs were on chose to minister punitive punishment. This is not Germany circa 1939. This is America. The only criminal punishment that should be carried out should be the imprisonment of the officer(s) who pulled the trigger on the taser post hand cuffs.
stand up
Good to see that there are a great many fascists still in the world . I wonder how much you've been paid for your rather subservient comment . Or perhaps your just wearing a uniform and helping your colleagues . Me ? I'll swallow none of it . I've been hearing more and more of such instances taking place . It's time that something is done . We are a nation born of rebellion , so it's been 200 years . Why should we take anything that our forefathers would not have . Would you march before a firing squad with such compliance ? I certainly would not . And forget about left and right , dem and republican , liberal and conservative . It's a distraction . The best way to attain victory in war is to divide and conquer . They know what they are doing . Divided we fall . And everyone can snivel and whine all they want about how nobody cares . Seems to me that at least 1 third of the population cares ( that's about 100 million souls , give or take a few ). The currently overstretched military couldn't deal with 50,000 on home soil let alone 100 million , so why don't we all just work together huh ? Or do you feel like chanting Amerika über alles from now on ?

That once again goes to show
That once again goes to show the power of the police and that there is no such thing as "FREEDOM OF SPEECH" anymore. I don't understand why the mic was turned off to begin with and then after he was tased the fat blonde officer was smiling as he was holding him down. See thats why cops are so hated b/c they take there jobs to there head.
I'm tiered...
We already know the outcome of this case: the videos will be reviewed, the defendant will be seen as disturbing the peace, (but at a question forum are there never any disturbing questions?), then he will be shown resisting arrest, but arrest for what? Why was Ander Meyer taken from the mic in the first place? I cant help but to feel torn between wanting to stand up and fight authority and wanting to calm Mr. Meyer down when i see these videos. Even though the law states that one must not resist arrest, how else is one to react when they already fear the government? I mean think about it, a college student has the opportunity to ask a potential leader of our country questions, that if answered could alter our future (Kerry not being elected President) and even open the eyes of America that we can still question our government. When the declaration of independence was written, our Forefathers were of the people, "We the people," But now the president is portrayed as a celebrity. The news reports that he is traveling to Texas for vacation, or that he nearly choked on a pretzel, but nothing about the bill he just signed that allows the police to monitor whatever they want (obviously this is just an example). So what are we, the people, going to do? What can we do. I am one of many that desire for our government to be questioned, but I am just like Mr. Meyer, I’m a college student with nothing but apathetic views on our government. I have no hope for our Mr. President’s ability to govern this country accordingly because there are too many dynamics of this society, and the media is the most capable of changing the world. But they aren’t doing anything either because of who knows why. It isn’t biased to ask the president if he is corrupt. It isn’t biased to ask him if he has cheated in some way. Asking questions only gets to the truth. And we should never fear either asking questions or the truth. I no longer want to be a fearful American only sure that if everything else fails I can turn the TV on and there will be a broadcast.
I digress; Andrew Meyer will be charged guilty of disturbing the peace and resisting arrest. But it shouldn’t be because he made some people upset and he wouldn’t stay calm; it should be because he tried to get the crowd worked up and intentionally wanted to scuffle with an officer. He posed questions that were not of some people’s liking which got other’s attention and then he was arrested for doing so, as far as I can tell from the footage. Unfortunately the subjectivity will be taken away from this case and simply the “facts” will be presented, but I hope not. I just hope that the media will one day realize that they hold the moral fabric of the world in their hands; with great power comes great responcibility.
American you better wake up!
Look our basic rights are being challenged, we have to wake up. Alot of people who are in charge of this country do not care about our freedoms they just care about how much money they have, and what they can get away with. Stop letting these people get away with murder and it doesn't matter what party is elected. The democrates want to kill unborn children and tax the heck out of everyone.
