Pit Bull Supporters Flood Website with Their Comments
And we have another follow up from a story we did last week that has gotten quite a response.
We told you how the town of South Pittsburg has banned roaming pit bull dogs.
Over the weekend.. We were swamped with hundreds of comments online about the story... Most supporting the dogs.
Check the old poll question and Bill Mitchell's story from Friday to read all about it.
We could quote the posts, But we'll let this one picture speak for many of you. (There are many more in the comments)
The comment read "do these look like killers?"
And another common message for the leaders of South Pittsburg was "blame the deed, not the breed."
We'll have more local reaction to the issue tonight on W-D-E-F News 12 at eleven.
Your Best Life Now - Joel Osteen
We All make mistakes - plus God has others plans for Michael Vick and the only way to get his attention was for him to be where he is right now - who are we to judge - Our God is a forgiving God - why can't we forgive as well - we are more concerned about animal rights than we are about human rights - people picketing on Michigan Avenue about cruelty to animals and we have so little regard and show indifference to people of various cultures-
THE GOD OF ANOTHER CHANCE
God does not disqualify us simply because we have failed. He's the God of another chance. You may have missed plan A for your life, but God has a plan B, a plan C, a plan D, and a plan E. God will always find a way to get you to your final destination - all he ask is that we trust him -
The Old Testament records how King David ordered a man murdered so he could marry his wife. But when David repented, God forgave him and still used him in a great way.
A man named Saul ated Christians; he chased them down, persecuted them, and had them thrown in jail. Yet God forgave him, chaned his name to Paul, and he ended up writing more than half the New Testament.
Rahab was a prostitute, yet God used her to help deliver the children of Israel. Nobody is too far gone, no matter what he's done. You need to know that God still loves you.
God has a great plan for Michael Vicks life - it might not be in football - but did you ever think that perhaps if Vick had remained in football he could have suffered some serious injuries which would have ended his football career -
Folks need to really search their hearts - they should be asking for forgiveness - we should be compassionate to one another - not throw stones - it just goes to show you that you can only depend on God - because friends will forsake you and turn their backs on you - But God will never leave you or forsake you - I believe God has spoken to Vick - people are blowing this whole situation out of proportion - as if he has done something personally to us - yes it is cruel to mistreat any living creature whether it be man or animal - look around - this is a cruel world we live in - look how we treat each other - look at this war where young men are killed everyday - some of them never had a chance to marry or have families - and those who would throw stones at Vick - shame on you - you need to get on your knees and ask God to forgive you for your wicked ways -
I am sure I am not alone - but I will be praying for Michael Vick and his family - everyone who is close to him is effected but this situation - but from it all he will come out of this a better man -
Vick can't do anything about his past mistakes. He will have to learn to let it go. But he can do something about right now. He's made a mistake, he has asked for forgiveness - and we should allow him to move on.
Michael Vick - hang in there - God still has a great future for you - great things in store for you - Your trust in God will allow you to shake off disappointment, guilt or condemnation - live today in an attitude of faith - Remember, "if we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to clense us from all unrighteousness" 1 John 1:9
It's not just the animal
I agree that it starts with the owner.
It was about the summer of 1993, I was 7 years old and my little brother Chip was 4 years old. Every day my brother and I would walk up the sidewalk with our dog Shelly, which was a Sheltie (smaller version of Lassie) to see Mr. Rose. Who was an old man that lived about a block away. Whenever the three of us would visit him, he would give Chip and I a cookie and a hot dog for Shelly. I was out of town one day over at my Aunt's house in Virginia leaving Chip with no one to go with. My mother told him to stay home, that Mr. Rose wasn't home today. However he giggled and continued to run out the back yard by himself. Carolyn my mother knowing that Chip would be only disappointed to find no one home, ran upstairs to find her shoes. Truth was that Mr. Rose was at the hospital that day sitting next to his wife "Mrs. Rose" who was dying from lung cancer. Carolyn was sitting on the edge of the bed tying her shoe laces when she heard the back screen door open, she went to the bathroom window to see Shelly running down the block after Chip.
As she ran downstairs out the same screen door and began her way to Chip. She heard my little brother screaming. Not sure what to think, she ran down the side walk and found him lying on the side walk crying covered in blood, pointing towards the back yard of the house in front of them. My mother having no clue what to think picked Chip up and ran him back to the house. Halfway down the side walk she could only focus on the fence to the backyard until she encountered what seemed to be a pit bull. My brother screamed and my mother froze, she describe the animal having scars all down it's back and the neck being bare from an old collar. Carolyn stood frozen and watched the dog run toward her and her son, in the corner of her eye she saw Shelly running at full speed from behind one of the houses towards the pit bull. Causing the animal to change course and attack her instead. My mother ran holding my brother towards the house, once inside she called 911 for help. My brother had been bleeding badly and she was sure that the pit bull would turn on someone else.
My father was home not long after and the cops were there just as quickly. With their guns drawn they went to find the pit bull. Behind the back yard by the creek they found the pit biting and tearing apart Shelly, who had been dead for some time now. The pit bull spotted the officers and once again began to charge after them as well. One of the officers fired a shot at the animal, but didn't seem to help. From what I understand from my father is that it took about three shots from the cops, for my father take over and shoot it down with his own shot gun. He wanted to take care of the animal from the beginning but law enforcement asked him to step down. When the pit bull finally passed he locked his jaw on a tree root in the ground. Animal control had to saw the root out of the ground to remove the animal. They had mentioned that this had to have been one of the worst cases they had seen in our area involving pit bulls.
I had to come home early from my aunt's house; I was taken to my grandmothers first. My grandmother sat me down and told me what happened. All I could do is cry; Shelly was my birthday present from my father. She was always with me, even when I went to bed at night. When I got home all I could see was blue and red lights and people from the news stations. Whenever I was asked anything, all I could do is cry. All I wanted to do is say goodbye to her and I couldn't. No one would let me near her. I loved her so much that I wanted to die with her. My father said something to me that I remember to this day, "I hope they understand what Shelly did from them when they are older, if it wasn't for her-it would have been my son."
Today do I blame everything on pit bulls? No. I blame about 75% of this on the owners. The owners only lived about 5 or 6 houses down. From what I understand is that the dog was chained down to a dog house. The owners were out of town and left the dog in the back yard. The dog for whatever reason broke the chain and found my little brother walking down the sidewalk and attacked, that is until Shelly came up the side walk from our house.
I do believe that these dogs are potentially dangerous and should only be kept by people that are qualified. That the animal control board should register these owners and do yearly inspections. Not every pit bull is like this, I strongly agree. But they do have the ability to become very dangerous.

google for "pitbull
google for "pitbull kills" Not all pitbulls are bad. Nor are guns, but you have to have a background check, and keep control of them at all times. If anybody thinks that you can control any living creature at all times (even when your not around and extra-exciting factors occur) you are wrong. (Nice as I can put it)
Out Of Control
Yes you can type "pitbull kills" into google search and it will pull up horrible stories. But you can also type in "Mother kills Child" into google search and alot of extremely upsetting stories will come up. Stories about both topics are not the typical mothers or pitbulls. They are unique cases of disturbed animals and disturbed humans. But the truth of the matter is most mothers and most pitbulls do not just attach children. There are extinuating circumstances that lead up to the event. In humans cases can range from medical/mental illness, tramatic childhoods, etc!! In pitbulls reasons are similar previous abuse, starvation, dog fighting, etc. Neither humans or pitbulls are born mean. They are made to be that way. What will it take to make ignorant uneducated people understand this. Yes it is very sad to hear of a person/child being attacked by an animal and my heart goes out to those families. BUT it is not the animals fault. It is the owners fault. Also law enforment officers and city officals for not inforcing basic non breed specific animal control laws. I know that in our town for instance there has been complaints about vicious animals (numerous breeds). However law enforcment in no way inforces animal control laws. Nothing is done about animals running loose in town. Accounts of vicious dogs are over looked with warnings. If these basic laws were inforced. Severe punishment for offenders that are found to have committed animal cruelty. And responsible dog ownership programs available in your area. I would gaurentee that the number of these horrible accidents would go down drastically. I am sure this is the case in MANY areas. Things would get better if officials would get to the root of the problem and stop picking on the American Pitbull Terrier. The same way they have picked on numerous other cause breeds for the moment. The root of all these matters are IRRESPONSIBLE INHUMAN OWNERS. Punish these people do not punish an innocent dog that is only doing what it was taught or reacting to cruel treatment. Alot of people support their "Vicious pitbull" theroies using statistics from the CDC about breed specific bites and fatalities. However a few years ago the CDC stopped reporting by breed specific statistics because they realized how innacurate they are..... The American Temperment Testing Society,( http://www.atts.org ) which is a study of different breeds to determine temperment and stability, shows that the American Pitbull Terrier is not a "time bomb" as some people refer to them. In fact they passed with an 84% which was better than alot of common "family pets". They scored higher than the Beagle, Bearded and Border Collie, Corgi, CHIHUAHUA, CHOW CHOW, COCKER SPANIEL, ALL TYPES OF SCHNAUZER, MINIATURE POODLE, COONHOUND, and the list goes on and on....Another vary informative place of information on dog attacks is http://www.fataldogattacks.com and http://www.nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com Karen Delise has dedicated MANY years to the study of dog attacks. I urge you all to check out these sites and to read her book Fatal Dog Attacks.... Many studies show that Pitbulls are not vicious, that it is in fact the human owners that are the vicious ones. I have owned this breed for
I have owned this breed for 10 years, they are the most awesome dogs on the planet. I would never own another breed. If the media would report all dog attacks instead of only pit bull attacks we wouldn't even be debating this issue, as everyone would see that pit bulls are not the #1 biters. But since the media is only here for ratings, I guess we'll never see accurate reporting.
Quite simply if you haven't
Quite simply if you haven't owned one, you are in no position to comment. Anyone who has owned one will almost certainly confirm what damn fine animals they are.
Pitbull love
I have been a proud owner of American Pitbull Terriers for about 6 years now. When I first was introduced to the breed I was scared because of things I had heard in the media. It only took me about 5 minutes to fall completely in love. Since that first meeting I have been around hundreds of pitbulls, from family pets, to show dogs, to weight pull dogs. I have not once in this time encountered a single one that I had any concern about being around. They are the most loving breed I have ever known. My husband and I have 6 daughters and I am completely comfortable with them playing with our dogs and feeding them.I do not worry for their safety for a single second.
The media is just on their "cause" for the moment. Before long it will die down and they will move on to their next cause. But in the mean time innocent people and their loved pets are being made to suffer for the stupidity of uneducated people. Untill you have spent time with one of these wonderful animals do not be to quick to judge. I gaurantee that an afternoon spent with an american pitbull terrier in a loving home will show you the abundent love that these animals have for people.

pitbulls
I met my husband 6 years ago and he had a pitbull. I was terified of him because of all the stories you here. The first time I went to pet him I fell in love with them. They are such unique animals. They are so fun to watch. We now have 6 pitbulls. We breed them and raise our own. I have 2 stepchildren ages 9 and 11. My 9 year old has been feeding all our dogs since he was about 6. We have never had any trouble from our dogs. Most of the time the attacks I have seen or heard about have been mixed breed dogs, they are not even fullblooded pitbulls. People have started this stereotype with these animals and it's sad. I feel the people that are wanting to ban them are the ones that just don't want to get to know them or about them. If they would take the time to learn about the history of the animal they would be amazed. But, it's just like with different races of people, until you get to know someone from another race or learn about their history we will always be fighting!! Hixson,TN
You are living in a make
You are living in a make believe world and obviously do not read newspapers or watch the news on TV to see just how many owners like yourself who now have been mangled by one of their own pit bulls or lost a child by a pit bull attack on them. I feel sorry for the person who experiences the attack by your dogs. I do not feel sorry for you. Good luck, maybe you will get lucky and not experience the tragedy others have experienced.
Make believe world?
We aren't living in a make believe world. You are experiencing tunnel vision. You see only what the news puts out there... and right now it happens to be an attack against an innocent breed of man's best friend. Pit Bulls... even the ones bred for fighting were never bred to bite humans. That is showing fear. When Pit Bull fighting was a popular thing the breeders would automatically kill a puppy for biting a human. They were bred not to fear anything and attack only on command. That is why they are a great pet for children. My 10 month old son can punch, pull tails, pull hair, and not one of my 3 pit bulls would ever even snarl at him. They love attention and no matter what I might do to them if they have done something they know not to, they would never snarl at me. They are just like any other dog, they love to make you happy. You have to understand the dogs that have been in these articles about attacks and such, most of the time, are stray or beaten, or not well taken care of. If your child were to grow up and kill someone, the news paper's would always bring up his back ground or how he was raised. Same Here. The people who don't do there research and just listen to the news and think they know it all are just ignorant.
I'm correcting my life as I type.
Phew! You've really turned it all around for me. Y'know I've been around Pit Bulls now since 1989, when my college buddy and I adopted one, and that shared responsiblity lead me to own my own dog (also a Pit Bull) about 12 years ago. Recently, I've adopted yet another of the same breed. Over the years I've spend many a free hour learning as much as I could about the breed's history, its health and socialiation needs, and its controversial place in modern culture, by reading books and speaking with the numerous Pit Bull owners I've crossed paths with. The thing is, none of that experience and learned knowledge comes close to educating me like your comment here. Why didn't I realize what the TV and the news were trying to tell me? Y'know, I feel so lucky that my dogs haven't attacked someone or their child, or me for that matter. Well, from here on out, I'm not taking anymore chances. From here on out, my dogs are eighty-sixxed! To hell with my life's experience! It was all make-believe and I don't want to live in a make-believe world any more. Buddy, I owe you one. To think all your knowledge and know-how about the breed would have been lost on me if not for your post. Man, I think of all the time you've spent sitting back earning your Pit Bull-know how on your couch, watching the tube and reading your magazines and papers, and I scoff at all of my make-believe experience I've had in the "real world". I can't wait to tell the everyone I know about this eye-opening experience. I also can't wait to tell them all about my new policies I've picked up from the TV and the news –1. Black People are all criminals, so they gotsta go. 2.Every middle eastern person hates our freedom, so they gotta hit that magic carpet on outta here. 3.Captain Kirk is now on Boston Legal, though he looks like a balloon version of himself. 4. Hurricane's cause way too much coastal damage and floods, so we need to send them to the middle east. 5. America's got talent! (Refer to #3.) 6. Six blades are better than 3 on shaving razor. 7. My life will get even more "real" when I get that new Sony Bravia HDTV. Thank you, so very much.
It is sad when people
It is sad when people believe everything they hear without thinking.
Dogs of any origin do not snap. Dogs simply do not attack their owners without warning.
Most major dog attacks are by repeat offenders who have lived in unsocialized settings and could never be considered a "family dog."
Pit bull type dogs, Great Danes, Dobermans, German Shepherd Dogs, Chows, and every other breed that has been known as "devil dogs" are simply “dogs.” Dangerous dogs are the result of dangerous owners. Effective laws target these people. Breed specific legislation make simple-minded folks feel better and politicians feel good about “doing something,” even if that “something” is targeting the wrong end of the leash leading to decreases in public safety.
Simple-minded folks believe the hype and urban myths. Dobermans of the 1980s, German Shepherd Dogs of the 1940s, and pit bull type dogs of today do not have "locking jaws," "brains bigger than their heads," or a temperament that causes them to "snap" and attack their owners.
It is too bad that folks do not step back a minute and think about this; I'm sure they would realize that there pieces missing in the stories; the typical case involves a dog that was chained "out back" with limited contact with the family or a dog was new to the household with a prior history of attacks. I'm not sure if this naiveté is an indicator of poor schooling or over-reliance on media hype, but surely it indicates a worrisome state of affairs for anyone concerned about facts and improving public safety.
Media is the reason for the image of the APBT and AST
I am sure we have all seen the T shirts bearing an image of our dogs that's not appreciated. The public needs to understand that it takes a special person to train, love, and admire their dogs for their breed spacific traits. Socialization is key for any K-9. An untrained dog is an unwanted dog. Period. If you are one of these people who think that my breed is a bad one, I would say that you have had the misfortune of a crule misunderstanding. In life, there are signs that lead you to a result. If you are blind to these signs, bad things happen. A house burns down, someone gets shot, an innocent child get's attacked by a dog. Life and our world is a result of human interference. Dog owners out there of all breeds, rise up, and be the best trainers and dog lovers you can be. Let's show the novist how wrong they are about the APBT and AST.
banned pitt bulls
I myself had wondered if it was true about what they say about pitt bulls. Some of our friends and family had them as pets and never seem to have had a problem. So we decided to adopt one a lil over a year ago.We named her Sadey and love her dearly. She has def. been a joy.In fact we love her so much we decided to get her a buddy to play with so we adopted another.Named her Stormy.I now believe that it is the way the owner treats the dog and how much time and love you give the dog. They are like any other dog. They want to please their owners. But I hope they dont plan on banning pitt bulls in hamilton county. We love are baby girls.

I love my dogs.
I have 3 APBT MY grandparents had an APBT she was a red nose My dad got her for his birthday as a teenager and when he married my mother he left her with them. She never was left at home, they took her on many trips to many different states and if she couldn't stay they wouldn't either. My grandmother ran a day care when I was a child, no one was afraid to leave their children their even after they met Delilah. No one was afraid that she would maim their child because she was raised in a good home with good people and had no history of violence. A man 2 doors down from her had a Rottie dog and when I was 8 it maimed a child that lived a block over, the child was 7 and he had went in to the yard to get a ball and well he got hurt seriously. Another thing is that some kids a cruel and they will throw rocks kick or hit dogs, this boy my grandmother babysat tried to get Delilah to bite him once, he kicked her repeatedly and she just ran away from him she was a very large dog not small by any means. She died in 96 my grandfather built her a casket bought her a tomb stone and buried her in the front yard of his house. Every year on her birthday and on they day of death they lay flowers on her grave. She was very well loved. My 3 pits have never posed a threat, they are a bit high strung, but I also have a wiener dog and you know what they have not eaten him yet, they all play with him and my male sleeps with him at night, they share everything and I have never had a problem. My 2 year old plays with them, I was raised around an American pit bull terrier my child will be and her children as well. I don't care what anyone says, if you let dogs run wild in packs or alone you are asking for trouble. If the city you live in is too stupid to enforce the leash law then they shouldn't be allowed to make any of the decisions weather they pertain to animals, people, or plants. And like the guy way up there said IF YOU HAVE NEVER OWNED A PIT BULL TERRIER THEN YOU HAVE NO ROOM TO POST A COMMENT. And on another note My husbands brother got mauled by a blue tick hound dog, my grandfather got bit by our blue tick hound dog, both had a history of biting and my brother in law was 4 when this happened to him he was playing in the yard and got too close to the dogs food and he snapped and ripped his inner right leg opened all the way up to his groin.... ANY DOG CAN BE VISIOUS... my only advice to everyone is Know your dog, don’t worry about the breed know how your dog is and if you cant keep them fenced in chained up or kenneled DO NOT OWN THEM... be responsible stop making everyone else pay for your stupidity.
