It was close, but it looks like you still won't be able to buy liquor by the drink at restaurants in Lafayette, Georgia.
472 people voted yes to allow liquor by the drink.
494 people gave the measure a thumbs down.
The results are still unofficial because provisional votes must be considered.
Several restaurant owners and residents had appealed to city council to allow liquor by the drink.
They say it will draw customers and increase revenue.
Yan Yesica & Yaniria Mexican Restaurant Owner Miguel Santiago says, "Most of the people from around here have to go somewhere else when they want to have Mexican food and have a beer or a margarita. They go to Dalton, Ringgold, Chattanooga. They go outside of the town and the county."
Pastor Todd Gadisof First Baptist Church says, "This is no way for a city to raise revenue. The bad outweighs the good. I was informed whatever might come in in the way of tax dollars and revenue would just be a drop in the bucket."
Opponents mounted a battle against the proposal raising concerns it would increase drinking and driving, deadly wrecks, addiction, and other negative effects from alcohol.
East Ridge DUMP

You remind me of the people of East Ridge Tennessee. For decades, they and their elected ones pounded their little fists on the table and shouted NO NO NO to Demon Rum. Little did they notice their neighbor to the south, Fort Oglethorpe, begin to grow and prosper. Meantime, East Ridge's "select" had their private clubs to hide out in that paid no taxes. Their children all left because you couldn't get so much as a beer at Pizza Hut in their holy town. So, sandwiched between a thriving FO and Chattanooga, East Ridge belatedly approved liquor after all the old timer church people died off or moved off because BLACKS actually LIVED in ER! But too late, now the town looks worse than Rossville Blvd. IDIOTS!
