Money Laundering Under Cover Operation Catches a Georgia Lawmaker and Pastor
They called it Tennessee Waltz here in the Volunteer State.
Now Georgia has an undercover sting of it's own... Just not a name.
One lawmaker pleaded guilty today and other public officials could follow.
Representative Ron Sailor apologized to the public after his plea.
Rep. Ron Sailor "Very sorry to all of those people who I've disappointed, who I've let down. My conduct is unacceptable, and I'm deeply regretful, and deeply sorry to all those people I've disappointed."
Prosecutors say that Sailor made a deal with someone he thought was a drug dealer from Florida.
The pastor took the man's money... And then sent it back to him... Minus a percentage fee.
But the drug dealer was really an undercover agent.
Now the feds say Sailor's cooperation is leading them to other public figures.
David Nahmias/U.S. Attorney: "He made the decision very quickly to try to do, once he was caught, try to do the right thing. To admit what he had done, plea guilty, and to cooperate."
Gov. Perdue:
"It's very disappointing. I think, again, it's one little nip at the public trust that we work hard to portray and project and to act out in elected office. We are held to a different standard."
Sailor will immediately resign from the legislature.
He faces up to a 20 year prison term.
