ARDMORE, Pa. (AP) - The United States has won its third straight Walker Cup, taking five singles matches and halving another for a 16½-9½ victory over Great Britain and Ireland at Merion Golf Club.
Chattanooga golfer Adam Mitchell won his doubles match play pairing with Brian Harman, defeating the twosome of Gavin Dear and Matt Haines, 3&2. The former McCallie star and Georgia grad fell in his singles match play this afternoon, losing 1 Up to Sam Hutsby.
Americans Ricky Fowler and Peter Uihlein went 4-0 in their weekend matches, and teammate Cameron Tringale won in an 8-and-6 romp Sunday in the third-largest winning margin by a U.S. player in singles. Bud Cauley went 3-0-1.
The U.S. team's margin of victory was the largest since its 18-6 win in 1997 at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y. The Americans lead the series 34-7-1.
The U.S. team needed two points in the Sunday singles to retain the cup and 2½ to win the championship after going 3-1 in the morning's alternate-shot matches that provided an 11-5 advantage.
