The Tennessee Regulatory Authority wants more people to take advantage of Lifeline and Link-Up.

These are programs that allow everyone on government assistance like food stamps and the National Free School Lunch program to pay less for telephone service.

Link-Up cuts the cost of telephone service hook-up in half.  Lifeline can reduce your telephone bill by $13.50 a month.

These are both federally funded programs.  "There's a charge on your bill, the Universal Service Support Fund," TRA Director Eddie Roberson explained Tuesday morning, "A small part of that goes to fund these programs. Some of the telephone companies also go over and above that and contribute on their own."

Some cell phone companies also offer free or reduced-price mobile phones.

Call your provider to learn more.

A Right?

Now I have heard it all! The right to a telephone? We certainly live in a very privileged society. I say we take care of actual needs first. Let us help people earn a decent living so they can afford their own food, shelter, and clothing. Then, they can decide on what to spend the rest of thier hard earned money.
