There's a battle brewing over liquor in the City of Lafayette.

Local restaurants want to be allowed to serve alcohol to boost business.

Opponents fear it will be a menace to the city.

Miguel Santiago, Yan Yesica & Yaniria, "It's pretty bad people walk in asking for it and they just walk out daily. That happens daily."

At Yan Yesica & Yaniria on Main Street in LaFayette, along with authentic Mexican cuisine, owner Miguel Santiago hopes to offer alcohol on the menu.

It's incentive he says will draw customers.

Miguel Santiago, Yan Yesica & Yaniria, "Our businesses are dying little by little because people walk in here and ask if we sell beers and wine or alcohol when we say no no margaritas at all because it's a dry town they just walk away mad and they never show back up again."

He and several restaurant owners and residents appealed to city council to allow liquor by the drink.

Now the issue goes before voters November 3rd.

Jessica Gunther, "We don't want it here in our little town."

It's hard for some folks around town to swallow.

Opponents plan for victory putting up signs urging people to vote no.

Gunther "One drink can change a life and many other lives because sometimes one person in your family affects more than just you it trickles."

Around 40 people got together at First Baptist Church Tuesday to encourage resident to keep LaFayette dry.

Among them Scott and several residents of the Penfield Christian Home, a recovery program for alcohol addiction.

They all say the costs far outweighs any benefit.

Scott, Penfield Christian Home, "Drinking while you eat that's how it started for me 40 years ago. I would have a beer or a drink while I ate. Even if you only have a beer or a drink while you eat you still have to get in that car and drive home and there's other innocent people driving around out there.

Early voting is underway until the end of the month.

The issue is on the November 3rd ballot.

Liq by Drink

There is nothing more that a small town needs than more drunks and more drunk drivers. If you Vote yes, you vote yes to more car accidents, crime, and deaths. Good Luck.

Vote no

Most people do drive out of town to go eat at restaurants in Fort o NOT because they sell alcohol but because all we have here in Lafayette is fast food. All the big chains are out of town. Mcdonalds, Mexican, and Chinese food gets old. I do not think liquor by the drink will change anything economy wise. Why would it? These Mexican restaurants saying they get costumers walk out, well they are ALWAYS busy I dont see their doors closing anytime soon because they have good food. Its also a religious issue. Drinking does alter judgment and can become habit forming. I vote no!

liquor by the drink

When the people who are against alcohol go to Fort Oglethorpe or Chattanooga for a meal and the resturant serves alcohol they have a choice. If you eat in LaFayette you don't have that choice. Anyone that thinks LaFayette is a prosperious town should take a look at how many empty stores there are. We need to wake up and do something that will stimulate the economy. Liquor by the drink could be the answer. Too many tax dollars are going down the road.

Very poor arguments

LaFayette needs to allow this to pass so it will help this town. The arguments made against it here are not valid at all. Jessica Gunther needs her head examined.

Republican issue

It is a republican issue vote no. We need safety first drunk drivers kill little children in car wrecks. Drinking can cause people to become to relaxed. And nearly ever place that serve alcohol are always dirty and present an unhealthy image for our young grade school students in the area. We don't need alcohol being sold near churches, schools or places that are frequented by people who believe that alcohol is socially unacceptable.

And if you are a republican voting no is very acceptable today.

LaFayette - Liqour problem or transportation issue?

The problem is not liquor, but the transportation available for people who drink. I don't agree with banning liquor in restaurants. Instead, a flourishing community with good taxi and bus transportation should be encouraged. Taxi businesses should get tax breaks if they can help the community. I've seen cities where taxi businesses using inexpensive, economical quality cars (i.e. Yaris) as taxis and offered a flat rate ($20) within 15 miles of the city. Anyone that can afford going out to drink, can afford a $20 taxi ride, specially if it is shared with a friend or two. Another solution would be to offer extended hours for buses on the weekend. And for crying out loud, put the schedule at the bus stops so that people know when the bus is coming. I can elaborate on this, but I think you all get the point.

Lets vote no to liquer by

Lets vote no to liquer by the drink and let the city of lafayette dwindle to nothing. let Shaw, Roper, and Bluebird leave as well. 100% unemployment. Thats what we want here, no job creation.

Drinking in restaurants

There are enough people drinking and driving. If they want to drink they need to go home and stay at home. People are being killed everyday, because people don't care if they drink and drive. Why should people be killed when someone else doesn't care.

Restaurant sipping

Restricting beer and wine in one town will not necessarily kill the restaurant trade, but it won't do it any good either.

Two points here; its important to remember that folks will take a drink if they're thirsty. If they can't get it in one town, they'll go to another.

Second, it should be noted that folks don't go to a restaurant to get loaded. They go to eat. Don't you?

I'd be interested to read some statistics about DUI arrests and their proximity to eaterys.

LaFayette

Why doesn't News 12 look into the resturant report cards in LaFayette?
Check into them for the past couple of months.
And they want to serve alcohol?
Seems like they cannot keep their establishments clean now!

As someone who lives in

As someone who lives in LaFayette it saddens me to see tax money leave our town and go to neighboring towns that serve liquor by the drink. Add to that the business that is lost as well as business that won't come to town because of the "dry" county.

LaFayette needs revenue for growth and improvement. Let's not let this opportunity pass us by.
