The mood in the hall of the General Assembly Tuesday morning oozed with anxious anticipation. Republicans stood poised to take control of the Tennessee General Assembly for the first time in nearly 140 years. Even Gubernatorial candidate Zach Wamp roamed the halls. "What I say to all my new colleagues here in the state house and state senate is with this new majority, is you cant just be the opposition party now because the burden is on you to govern." Some Democrats felt the change in the air too, beginning to box up items in their offices. Rep. Joanne Favors says "there are many Republicans I hope will vote their conscience and hope they will." The mood quickly changed, when lawmakers arrived to find documents on their desks questioning the residency of an incumbent Republican. Procedure called for Rep. Donna Rowland to be seated after a finding by the District Attorney General. Then, after taking the oath of office, Democrats pushed for a recess, to allow family members to "take pictures." Republicans tried to table to motion, but failed when Freshman Lawmaker Terri Lynn Weaver of Smith County became confused and voted "no" on the motion to table, not the motion to recess. When lawmakers returned from break, now an hour into session, they tackled the Speakers position. Representative Jason Mumpower of Bristol received the first nomination. Republicans hoped to end the nomination process there, but after more political wrangling, allowed Democrats to submit a candidate. What happened next some may describe as the political play of the decade as all 49 Democrats backed Kent Williams, a Sophomore Republican from Carter County, a district just miles from Mumpower's hometown. During the voice vote on the Speaker's position, the House clerk called every Democrat first, then every Republican, except Williams. The 49 to 49 split was then decided by Williams. Williams accepted the position amid cheers and boos, prompting state troopers to enter the House chambers ready to respond to an outburst. After the vote, Representative Gerald McCormick reacted. "I think we've elected a dishonest and dishonorable man to Speaker. He's made a joke of the government, he should be ashamed of himself, he's a bold face liar." Republicans promptly kicked Williams out of their next caucus meeting. Rep. Eric Watson says "everyone is surprised right now that's what's happening. We don't know the outcome yet, its not over." Republicans still hold a 50 to 49 majority. But what that means now, is unknown.

Take either: A) The most ambitious young Republican, or B) The most isolated Republican, ideally from a district that is evenly split, and make him KING.
I'm sure the Republicans are pissed off. You'd be too, if you got "schooled" like that.

It is so comforting to know we have 50 clowns running the state. Make me feel proud of all the Bush, Cheney patriots who have accomplished the mission. You get what you voted for. I hope your happy with your decisions. Most of you still want 4 more years you still have not had enough.

What's a "bold face liar"?
I've heard of a "bald-faced liar," but not a "bold face liar." Silly Republicans can't even get this right.

Just a point of information, McCormick did say "bold." That's not a typo or misquote.

Republican'ts kicked Republican't out of caucus meeting

Maybe he should start caucusing with the Democratic politicians, then. And maybe start putting Democratic majorities into the committees. After all, if he's not wanted by his fellow Republican'ts, and he actually wants to accomplish something (unusual for a Republican't to actually want to accomplish something, but, hey - anything's possible), maybe he should stick with the politicians who are more interested in running the government, instead of the obstructionist whiners crying because they got outmanouvered...

What goes around comes
Submitted by Guest (not verified) on January 14, 2009 - 2:07pm.
What goes around comes around. They are electing someone who they knew lied to everyones faces (I sat there on the house floor and know many of the Democrats and Republicans alike). There are many other Democrats who are more qualified and DO NOT LIE and are honest. This puts the Democratic party to shame. Shame on you for supporting ANYONE Republican or Democrat who would like. All he really had to do is not support Mumpower in the first place. He is a coward and a disgrace to all Tennesseans.

Rosalind Kurita? Mmmmm, I thought so. Shameful Democrats, spare me. I will admit Bob Rochelle is pretty much a horses' or should I say goats' rear, but the brain trust that is the Republicans in the TN House is the only thing that is shameful and a disgrace. I bet you haven't thought of this, but perhaps this might be your parties' Karma revisiting it. Stacey Campfield and Bill Hobbs alone should be enough to have a pox placed on the TRP for generations.

"...a dishonest and dishonorable man...He's made a joke of the government, he should be ashamed of himself, he's a bold face liar."
That's pretty much a description of the modern-day GOP. Why kick him out of the Republican caucus? Because he'll make them look bad? Sorry, that ship has already sailed.

Before the vote, Williams GOP colleagues asked him if he was going to vote GOP, and he told them: "Yes". He kept his word when he voted for himself.
Maybe the GOP should consult with a sharp legal mind like say, Glenn Reynolds, to see if he can change reality for them.

You should check your facts

You should check your facts before commenting. He verbally committed and signed the pledge to vote for THE REPUBLICAN CAUCUS NOMINEE as well a Republican Pro Tempore....what is your excuse on the second? I am a Republican and would rather support AN HONEST DEMOCRAT than that man. Have some pride in your state and what honesty means. All of the legislatures have their faults- they are human, however spend a day up there and then come back to me with some feedback. Until then your opinion is not educated.

So they are supposed to vote
So they are supposed to vote for whoever they are told to vote for, sound's pretty hitleresque.
