Parents only have a few days to finish their Halloween homework, but this assignment goes past just adding those finishing touches to your Trick-or-Treat threads.
Detective Sergeant Mason Brewer of the Walker County Sheriff's Office explains: "In this particular day and time things have changed. You don't necessarily know who your neighbors are and the house you're hitting. You really know nothing about it." The Walker County Sheriff's Office has a website that lets you know whose homes you're haunting. The Sex Offender Registry is available at the click of your mouse. "It lets you see where they're at, see a map of where they're at and give you an idea of where they're at in relation to where you're going to be," adds Brewer. This way you can decide whose treats you should take in... Ahead of time. "Our particular program," Brewer continues, "you're allowed to sign up for email alerts which allow you to keep track of where certain offenders are." The parole and probation board recommends offenders keep the lights off- so kids don't come looking for candy. But not all offenders are still on probation. "You may have people who have already done their time in prison and are no longer on probation, so it's up to the Sheriff's Department to know where their houses are at," says Sgt. Brewer. So the safest bet this Halloween is to do your research and Trick-or-Treat with your kids in a neighborhood you know. Access the Walker County Sheriff's Office Sex Offender List.
