Hamilton County Commissioner Wants Tasers Out of Schools

A Hamilton County Commissioner calls for Tasers to be pulled out of schools.

This after a student was tased Monday to stop a fight... And after a Moccasin Bend patient died this weekend after a Tasing incident.

Still, others say Tasers are a useful tool that keep officers from using more deadly force.

Hamilton County Commissioner Greg Beck says, "The Tasing needs to stop right now."

Beck wants Tasers out of Hamilton County's schools, "These Tasers are dangerous."

An 18 year old Brainerd high school student was Tased Monday after refusing to stop fighting with a 17 year old.

The students refused medical treatment after the incident.

Beck says there's a better way, "You don't know what kind of effects it's gonna have on a kid, even later on."

But to Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Hammond those Tasers serve a purpose, "If whoever the suspect is that you're trying to take under control resists you you move to whatever level of force continuum you have to to finally get compliance. It's no different in the schools."

Hammond says his officers are trained to use a Taser, and know when they're safe.

He says School Resouce Officers will not use a Taser until they've first given verbal commands or tried physical restraint, "I can tell you any number of incidents where the mention of the Taser or the officer's command that if you don't stop the taser will be used immediately stops the fight."

Richard Williams spent 12 years counseling high school students... Now he counsels people in the criminal justice system.

He believes a Taser is often better than the alternative, "I think the Taser is better than beating somebody up."

Williams says many of these "children" are a big as grown adults and need more discipline from home, "They don't respect the authority of the parents, they don't respect the authority of the teachers, eventually they gonna have to accept the authority of the police."

While Beck agrees with the need for more discipline... He says the Taser isn't the way to get it, "If the officers feel like they can't break up a fight without going to the next level, which is a Taser, then they need somebody else on the campus who can do that."

Sheriff Hammond says he has no intention of taking Tasers from his School Resource Officers.

As for the incident with the Moccasin Bend patient who was Tased at Erlanger Hospital.

The hospital says the officer who used a taser Friday was involved in another high profile case.

Shane Webb was fired from the Chattanooga police department following a surveillance taped beating in 2004.

The department accused Webb of Tasering the suspect while he was in handcuffs.

On Friday... Authorities say Edward Buckner became combatant at the hospital.. When Webb Tasered him.

He was taken back to Moccasin Bend.. But soon collapsed and died.

Erlanger officials say officers are authorized to carry and use the weapon only after they have completed an instruction course.

Further comment will not be made until until Buckner's autopsy report comes back.

Mr. Beck's comments don't

Mr. Beck's comments don't surprise me. When a student can walk out of class, pushing a teacher aside without consequences and the teacher get reprimanded for being in the student's way, we know who really rules the schools. Teachers are criticized regularly for not being able to manage students in schools, yet they are warned that if they "block" a student from walking out of class or even out of the school, they will be in trouble for "putting their hands" on a student. It's a wonder that there are teacher shortages...

Hey, I personally agree with

Hey, I personally agree with beck. I thinkg they SHOULD take the tasers out of school. Make sure you either tase the idiots OUTSIDE or (my personal favorite), draw the sidearm and blow the fool away.

So, tell me, all you bleeding heart, liberal, entitlement greedy jack@sses, which woul YOU rather have?!

taser

as a former police officer it think as sheriff stated it beats the alternative of use of higher power of force to stop the action i think the taser a safer alternative

Since Mr. Beck appears to

Since Mr. Beck appears to think he's an "expert" on how to handle unruly teenagers why not place HIM in one of our high-risk schools and see what measures HE would take to subdue fighting between grown men (18 IS an adult) when other measures have failed. It's very easy to stand back and point fingers and say "they should have done thus-and-so" when you're not the one having to address the problem. Tasers are a VERY useful tool and fall far short of the drastic results of having to use a service weapon. If that's what it takes to control unruly students - then so be it. But I think "Mr" Beck should walk a mile in their shoes before he starts critizing others for doing their jobs.

Clearly Greg Beck does not

Clearly Greg Beck does not support Students, Teachers, or our Officers in the schools. Just let commissioner Beck break up one brawl, pay all the medical expences and legal fees and write all the apologies and he might change his tune. What a failure to support our troops in trenches that really count.

Bad Kids

It's about time someone took care of these little whippersnappers! A few volts will straighten them out.

The grown ups will take care of business

Sheriff Hammond and the grown ups know what to do. Greg Beck needs to go to the back of the class.

Tasers in Schools

Tasers aren't as bad as they are made out to be. If the student had stopped fighting as requested in the first place, the officer wouldn't have had to use it. Obviously talking didn't work. Grow Up!! Make these students and adults responsible for their actions and protect our law enforcement and others from violent situations.

I'm sure when the autopsy comes back it will find that Mr. Buckner did not die from being tased. It sounds like he had some underlying medical conditions that probably contributed to his death.

People have been tased multiple times and lived. There's usually something else that contributes to the problem (medical/health/drugs).

Besides, most people don't want to be tased and tend to cooperate. And, in the case with the teenager, the officer would have been the wrong no matter what method he/she took to control the situation.

Tasers Out of Schools

Let me first apologize if the tone of the following comment sounds harsh. The commissioner who thinks school SROs should not be allowed to use tasers in violent situations is irresponsible to say the least. Was this commissioner present when the SRO tased the 18 year old student who happened to be fighting with another student? Can the commissioner explain why the 18 year ignored all efforts to break up the fight prior to forcing the SRO to tase him?

SROs have the heavy responsibility of keeping our students and faculty safe. The SRO even has the task of protecting the misguided student who chooses to fight or cause problems in the classroom. According to reports, the 18 year old student was tased only after he could not be subdued. He was tased to protect others from his violence and I am sure he was tased to protect him from himself.

I fear the commissioner's comments and concerns are based on race and free publicity for future elections. The commissioner is simply trying to ride the coattails of the Erlanger tasing earlier in the week. There can be NO comparison between a physically weakend, mental patient being tased by amature mall(hospital)cops and a violent 18 year old student being tased by a trained professional police officer. Shame on him and shame on the media for giving him a soapbox!

beck seem to forget when he

beck seem to forget when he was a jailer.there are times when such force is the olny one you have at the time of the incident. maybe beck thinks he can stop the fights, he didn't at the jail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If a big burly police

If a big burly police officer cant handle a high school student without using a taser he has no business being an SRO.........or a police officer for that matter!

Big Burly Police

You need to get your head on straight...I bet you are one of the officer hating fools around that if you are in trouble are the first to call for an officer. Maybe not all officers are big and burly and if you haven't been to a high school lately...the kids there are not always small and usually the ones starting the fight and needing to be broke up are the larger ones of the crowd. From your statement you must obviously be one of the adults that had no respect for authority as a child and you prove a point to what happens if you don't teach respect at an early age.

who said the police officer

who said the police officer was big and burly? the "student" is 18. they did not give the height and weight of the adult student involved in the fight. maybe he was really really big. breaking up high school students is the same as breaking up citizens on the street. use the force you are given I say.

Beck had no reason to make public his comment. if he did not like how it was handled then he should have made a formal complaint. This just gives the students more reason to try and push the envelope a little more.
