Governor Sonny Perdue Prays For Rain in Georgia

| |

Governor Sonny Perdue lead a public prayer service today for rain in Georgia.

Several hundred people attended the service outside the state Capitol.

Although it was announced as an interfaith event.. Only three protestant ministers joined the governor.

And 20 protestors demonstrated outside.

Here is the entire prayer offered by the Governor on Tuesday.

The Governor's Prayer for Rain

We also include the story that ran on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.

CBS story on the Governor's Prayer

After twenty months of drought, Georgia's in the market for a miracle.

Gov. Perdue: "GOD WE NEED YOU. WE NEED RAIN."

Sonny Purdue, Georgia's GOVERNOR, today became the state's chief pastor. He led a prayer for rain, right on the front lawn of the State House.

Lake Lanier, North Georgia's main source of drinking water, dropped more than 17 feet below normal. So low, boaters walk way out to get in. This year the lake's had barely HALF its typical rainfall.

In a very public way, Purdue looked to the sky for answers.

GOV. Sonny Purdue - (R) Georgia: "WE DO BELIEVE IN MIRACLES. WE DO BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE THE MIRACLE CREATOR."

Bruckner: "IT'S A PUBLIC DISGRACE."

Ed Bruckner wants rain, too.

But like these protestors, mostly atheists and agnostics, Bruckner sees a clear church-state violation. A PUBLIC prayer on state property led by Georgia's top executive.

Ed Buckner - Protestor

" MY PUBLIC LEADER IS MAKING A FOOL OF HIMSELF AND ACTING AS THOUGH ALL THE PEOPLE OF GEORGIA AGREE WITH THIS FOOLISHNESS."

In desperate droughts, praying for rain goes back thousands of years, from this African tribal group to Indian rain dancers.

And Georgia's tried everything else.

In a growing crisis, the state's tried water BANS.

Water COPS. With thousand dollar fines for violators.

And now the power of PRAYER.

Gov. Purdue: "THANK YOU LORD, FOR THE RAIN TO COME."

Mark Strassmann reporting:

"GEORGIANS CAN DEBATE WHETHER POLITICIAL LEADERS SHOULD CHAMPION RELIGIOUS SOLUTIONS.

BUT NO ONE ARGUES ABOUT THIS STATE'S NEED FOR SIGNIFICANT RAIN.

AND SO FAR, IT'S ONE PRAYER THAT GOES UNANSWERED.

MARK STRASSMANN CBS NEWS, ATLANTA."

He should've prayed - to a milk jug!

If the prayer works, hallelujah. If it doesn't, it's the mysterious way. You can't lose.

A prayer to a milk jug, that is.

Freedom of my Civil Rights

God, Governor Sonny Perdue ignores terror on this child of yours. As proof on video of the 06-10-02 Fort Oglethorpe, GA. City council meeting. Made by U.C.TV 3. Or sidewalks on battlefield parkway in catoosa county. After I, Tony Baugh was giving tickets in my electric wheelchair in 2000. Where there was no sidewalks until after I set up. And here in 2008 my civil rights is still being broke. As I roll what God sent me to keep on keeping on. A wheelchair to enjoy life.

prayer, God, our country...

If a leader/authority figure prays you rant about seperation of church and state....READ INTO OUR COUNTRY'S HISTORY...and stop being so ignorant.
Our country was founded upon the principles of christianity, faith, and belief in GOD!!
If you don't believe it... open your wallet, pull out a bill, and read the words "IN GOD WE TRUST".
You can take prayer out of our schools, the ten commandments out of courthouses, but the truth still remains...
This nation was founded on God's principles...

I believe that Gov. Perdue is an exceptional leader, and a wonderful example of a man of God. I commend him for that.

Where do you get your information

First of all, if you do not like that the majority of the country is Christian, MOVE! There are plenty of countries that probably cater to your religious beliefs or lack thereof. Second, if you would study history, you would find that this country was founded with God (that is a capital G for those that are having spelling problems) in mind, and last, but certainly not least, there is nothing in the constitution that supports/states a separation of church and state.

the opposition responds

Sonny Perdue's Rain Dance was not only a violation of Church/State separation, but an embarrassment to the thinking people of Georgia. I am pulling all my support from him and the Republican party because of his "antics".

prayer for rain

No embarrasment at all! I'm proud of your governor. Pull your support from the governor and Republican party. He's got the support of God........why would he need yours???

There is nothing in the

There is nothing in the constitution about a separation of church and state

Georgia's govenor prays for rain

This is what real leaders in America do. Acknowledging God as The Creator and relying on Him for the future of America as it was being birthed this is what our fore fathers did. Keep up the praying in the public eye. And when the prayer is answered all will know that God is God. May God bless you and the great state of Georgia. May your example be followed by all the governors. America is great and it is because we have relied on God. As we push God out He will leave. Look @ our public schools. Look @ the state of our politics. Politicians afraid to stand for the godly priciples that have made this country great. Thank you Governor Sonny Perdue.

"And when the prayer is

"And when the prayer is answered all will know that God is God."

Now, I'm not much of a religious person for my own reasons, however I do support others in their own beliefs. But this comment right here is like saying if I prayed for a quarter to land heads up, and it landed tails up 10 times in a row, then finally heads up....Well that must mean god is god and he is real for this heads up quarter. Now look, rain is just as much chance as anything, and it will come in due time. Have faith in your religion but have some common sense too.

As far as the real issue at hand, there is a line being blurred more often than not in our government. That line being separation of church and state. It's very important to have strong leaders in our society, whether they believe their strength comes from faith in god or from a jar filled with magic sand. However for the latter part, if we had a leader who in fact believed in a magically jar of sand he would quickly be condemned and put out of office, no matter how much good or bad he was doing for our country.

With our country being primarily Christians, most gladly accept the mention of god into the speeches of our leaders. For those people nothing is wrong with it at all, and in essence if our country was 100% Christian there wouldn't be anything wrong with it at all. Clearly though we are a culturally diverse nation. Every person is entitled to their own personal beliefs, and this being said, a majority of the population tends to overlook said fact because of their own beliefs.

The reason to separate church and state isn't to condemn god or shun his existence, no. It's merely to ensure that the percentage of our population that doesn't hold the leading officials beliefs is accounted for. If we continue down this path of ignoring that separation we will find ourselves in a country with a "Be a Christian or get out" policy. That simply isn't right. And if any Christian thinks thats the type of world we should live in then they need to re read that dusty bible in their home. We were created with the right, the ability, and the option to choose. And for that reason only God shall, can, and truly will judge us.

Praying for rain asking Yahweh Jireh for provision in our need

DID YOU KNOW THESE FACTS?

Death is certain but the Bible speaks about untimely death!

It is written in the Bible (Galatians 6:7):
'Be not deceived; God is not mocked:
for whatsoever a man sow,
that shall he also reap.'

Here are some men and women who mocked God :

John Lennon (Singer):
Some years before, during his interview with an American Magazine, he said:
'Christianity will end, it will disappear.
I do not have to argue about that. I am certain.
Jesus was ok, but his subjects were too simple, today we are more famous than Him' (1966).

Lennon, after saying that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, was shot six times.

Tancredo Neves (President of razil ):

During the Presidential campaign, he said if he got 500,000 votes from his party, not even God would remove him from Presidency.
Sure he got the votes, but he got sick a day before being made President, then he died.

Cazuza (Proud of his bi-sexuality being a Brazilian composer, singer and poet) did the following:
During A show in Canecio ( Rio de Janeiro ),
while smoking his cigarette, he puffed out some smoke into the air and said:'God, that's for you.'

He died at the age of 32 of LUNG CANCER in a horrible death.

The designer who had the Titanic built after its construction, a reporter asked him how safe the Titanic would be.With an arrogant tone he said:
'Not even God can sink it'

The result: I think we all know what happened to the Titanic

Marilyn Monroe (Actress)
She was visited by Billy Graham during a presentation of a show.He said the Spirit of God had sent him to preach to her.

After hearing what the Preacher had to say, she said:
'I don't need your Jesus'.
A week later, she was found dead in her apartment

Bon Scott (Singer)
The ex-vocalist of the AC/DC. On one of his 1979 songs he sang will boldness:
'Don't stop me; I'm going down all the way, down the highway to hell'.
On the 19th of February 1980, Bon Scott was found dead, he had been choked by his own vomit.

Campinas (IN 2005)

In Campinas , Brazil a group of friends, drunk, went to pick up a friend.....

The mother accompanied her to the car and was so worried about the drunkenness of her friends and she said to the daughter holding her hand, who was already seated in the car:
'My Daughter, Go With God And May He Protect You.'

She responded: 'Only If He (God) Travels In The Trunk, Cause Inside Here.....It's Already Full '
Hours later, news came by that they had been involved in a fatal accident, everyone had died, the car could not be recognized what type of car it had been, but surprisingly, the trunk was intact.
The police said there was no way the trunk could have remained intact. To their surprise, inside the trunk was a crate of eggs, none were broken

Christine Hewitt (Jamaican Journalist and entertainer)
said the Bible (Word of God) was the worst book ever written.
In June 2006 she was found burnt beyond recognition in her motor vehicle.

Many more people didn't believe in Yahweh- Our Eternal Father, and Jesus the Son who was given all authority on earth so we could call upon His Name!!!
Try Our Eternal Father - He is the Real Deal and will provide all our needs through Jesus Christ! Just Believe!
Shalom to You-

Many have died, but only Jesus died and rose again, and he is still alive.

'Jesus'

I have done my part, Jesus said

'If you are embarrassed about me,

I will also be embarrassed about you before my father.'

PERDUE FOR PRESIDENT !

THANK YOU FOR BEING A TRUE LEADER GOVERNOR PERDUE, MAYBE YOU SHOULD RUN FOR PRESIDENT!

Rain in Goergia

Thank you people of Georgia for leading the way and turning to God for His help in time of need. It was glorious, driving through a pounding rain across Georgia last night. God is still on His throne and keeping His promises: Matt 7:7 Ask and it shall be given, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you.

May God bless America,

Pat Miller
Athens, TN

Thank You Governor Purdue

Thank you, governor, for acknowledging the power of God, and the fact that all our blessings come from God. There are many of us in Texas and across the the country who applaud you and join you in prayer. You have set a good example for all of America as we enter this time of thanksgiving.
May God bless you and may God bless the people of Georgia.
Lonnie Vance, Texas

So, tell me... Rain was

So, tell me...
Rain was predicted by the National Weather Office 5 days prior which was 3 days prior to the prayer meeting. Is Sonny gonna also pray that the Boston Red Sox win the 2007 World Series ?

The Governor's "Indian Dance"

I totally agree. Sonny Perdue's recent "antics", a clear violation of Church & State separation, have totally convinced me to pull back support from him and the Republican party. Sonny Perdue is an embarrassment to the thinking people of Georgia!

So tell me

Yes, and rain was predicted several times befor bye the National Weather Service and NEVER happened.

You can doubt God answered the prayer - or you can open your eyes and heart to Him.

Either way - God is still on the throne whether you believe it or not. HE is in control.

GOD WE NEED YOU. WE NEED RAIN

Georgia Guidestones, Elbert County, Georgia.

You may want to consider removing this monument from your state or pray to that god for rain...

Prayer: Praise God all the World

Governor Perdue,
I want to thank you for showing wisdom and courage to lead the people in the State of Georgia to the ONLY answer to for our needs. God (Jesus) is the answer!.
May I quote the bible and encourage you to continue to seek God for the State of Georgia and our Country!

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
May rain come and Glorify God for his mercy and grace!

God Bless you!

Praying for rain

Childish idiots, your ideas about God are retarded.
Over and over again you push and preach and rant nonsense about some kind of imaginary super dad who supports your nasty self centered beetle-like lives.
I'm sick of it.
You're making the world a vile insane asylum by refusing to act and think rationally.
Please read Dawkins - The God Delusion. Stop hiding behind medieval ideas and wildly interpretable and dubious 'scriptures'.
Get your ignorant faith out of my face.

Sunny's Prayer

You have to admit, it worked. Even the most skeptical and disbelieving I think were amazed at the response from both the people supporting Gov. Perdue AND the reaction from the Heavens... It just took a little prayer... And we had some serios precipitation.

No, I don't have to admit that Sonny Perdue's prayers "worked"

Rain was predicted before his Indian Dance. His prayer "antics", a clear violation of Church & State separation,
only convinced me to pull back all the support I've given him and the Republican Party. He is an embarrassment to this state!

rain

you keep right on praying governor !!!! that is what our nation is founded on .

GOD bless you

Asking God for rain

Thank you Gov. Perdue for your prayer for rain.
Your public prayer was a great testimony of your faith in God to many people in this country. I applaud you for being brave enough to do the only thing that will do any good in this desparate situation. It rained in Demorest last night and I know God will give us relief from the drought now. Don't worry, you put it in God's hands and He certainly is answering your prayers.

Governor Perdue

Its raining Hallelujah! If more only understood the power of prayer. I was sittin on my bed around midnight and heard some noise I said what is that, when I looked out the window I was so grateful to God to see the rain. I knew God was going to answer the prayers of His people. THank You Governor Sonny Perdue. I am so thankful to God for his faithfulness.

And it rained today...

It rained today. You can argue with the Governor, but you can't argue very well standing under an umbrella.

Don Brown, Duluth GA

I wasn't standing under an umbrella

Since the writer writes from Duluth, I'm wondering where he was standing under the umbrella. Also a resident of Duluth, I didn't see a drop of rain after the governor's "Rain Dance". It may have rained in Atlanta, but that was the forecast before Sonny's antics, which, by the way, were a clear violation of Church/State separation. He is an embarrassment to the thinking people of Georgia.

I agree

I agree. The Prayers and Rain are both very welcome.

Prayer for Rain

My hat is off to Governor Purdue! I am thankful to finally see a public leader asking God for his help! Don't let the critics get you down. I am sitting here in North Georgia listening to the rain!!!!! Keep praying and may God be with Mr. Purdue and Georgia!

So very proud of our Govenor

What a proud day to be Georgian! Yes, I do believe in the Power of God's promises "wherever two or more are gathered in my name..." There may have been 20 protestors but there are legions of believers standing with our Govenor. God is here and he has heard a very humble servant give Thanksgiving in all things, ask forgiveness for when we have not been good stewards of His blessings, and then asked for the blessing of rain. I am thankful that our Govenor has taken a stand
in front of the noisy minority. It is time that the silent majority remain silent no more. Govenor Perdue I can only imagine that tonight our God in heaven is looking down and saying "this is my child whom I love and am well pleased...." Let the showers of blessing begin!

If the agnostics and

If the agnostics and atheists REALLY don't believe God is real, why do they care if anyone/everyone prays or not???? I don't care if someone says they are going to tell Santa that I've been bad . . .

We need more leaders like Governor Perdue, who are not afraid to call upon the only One Who can help us.

Why we care

We care because his "antics" are a clear violation of Church/State separation! He is an embarrassment to the state of Georgia!!!

Agnostics don't disbelieve

Agnostics don't disbelieve in God, they're just not Arrogant enough to think the know the exact answer.

prayer is what this country

prayer is what this country needs if you don"t believe in god I will pray for you this is exactly what it states in the bible Gov.Perdue my hat is off to you

TOO LITTLE TOO LATE

There's nothing wrong with prayer, but its too little too late. Governor Perdue's been advised that these water problems were likely to eventually develop in north Georgia ever since he took office, and yet he has taken no steps to prevent this from happening.

I am a native Atlantan and our governor is an embarrassment. He repeatedly puts the sole blame of our water problems on the Feds’ protection of endangered mussels, when in truth that is only a small part of the equation. The water levels need to stay close to where they currently are in order to sustain two power plants as well as other businesses downstream. This underscores a core tactic of republicans: always blame the environmentalists, never blame big business!

Our current water dilemma has come to a head due to another republican failing: they encourage unchecked development with no regard to the infrastructure or natural resources. Our previous governor and speaker of the house, both democrats, realized that Atlanta’s decades-long unprecedented growth would most likely eventually lead to water problems. They had plans to build three reservoirs as well as to devise an overall water plan for North Georgia, and had raised $250 million through bond sales towards those ends. When the republicans took over the state leadership those plans were quickly scrapped, with no further regard to water mangagement until very recently…they never even considered devising a water plan.

Experts have predicted this day would come for years (one consulting firm repeatedly advised the state leadership that this day was imminent), yet the republicans have done absolutely nothing….now the best idea they seem to have to offer is prayer. I’m praying too…I pray for better state leadership!

Why can you not lay politics

Why can you not lay politics aside and just be grateful for the rain? I've not met a perfect democrat, republican, or whatever. No matter who is in office there are mistakes made.

As I recall New Orleans lay under water because of bad judgements made decades before George Bush took office; but yet he and FEMA got the blame.

Why don't you run for office and straighten out the world's problems since you are evidently an expert!!

AMEN!! Your thoughts are

AMEN!! Your thoughts are exactly right. It is amazing how many people gripe and yet less than 20% actually VOTE....and then they want to express their outrage at their elected officials. Thankfully, as a young girl I learned firsthand from my father, while we were living in Spain, how important voting is. A soldier stopped my father to gripe about the political "going's-on" back in the states...my father listened for a few minutes and then asked the younger man, "Did you vote in the election?" The young man started giving my Dad all the reasons he hadn't voted...my Dad held up his hand and stopped him by saying,"if you don't care enough to be heard when it counts, don't waste my time gripping at the choices made by those of us who did vote, no matter how hard it was." I will NEVER forget the shocked look on that man's face, nor how very profoundly important I learned my vote was.

Huh?

Are you done yet?? I don't think it matter whether you post this nonsense once or several times. It still is wrong.

I just walked in from the rain.

Thank you Govenor Perdue for

Thank you Govenor Perdue for believing in the power of prayer. It rained in North Ga. last night and we are getting rain right now.

I stand with the Governor

I live in New Jersey and I applaud the Governor for turning to the only one with the answer Almighty God, I too pray that his prayers will be answered in a mighty ourpouring of rain for days so that the mouth of the skeptics and critics will be shut for once. It is just a pity that God allows the rain to fall on the just and the unjust and for once create a modern day Goshen where only those who truly believe in His ability to send rain would receive it. Keep praying Governor, the Lord does answer the prayers that come from a penitent and repentant heart. United we stand divided we fall! God bless America!

Governor's prayer

Praise God that this nation has a man like Governor Perdue who is not afraid to stand with boldness and look to God for answers! I pray for God to answer swiftly with cool, refreshing rain for the state of Georgia. And I pray that the eyes of the doubters will be opened to see that God is real, He is alive, and He still answers prayer!! God bless you and the many who stand with you in obedience to God, Governor Perdue!

SONNY PERDUE AND PRAYER

SONY PERDUE HAS DONE GREAT THINGS FOR GEORGIA. IF HE WANTS TO PRAY IN PUBLIC, LET HIM. IT IS, AFTERALL HIS AMERICAN RIGHT ALSO. SOMEBODY NEEDS TO SUE ACLU SO THEY WILL SHUT UP FOR A CHANGE AND GET OFF THE FRIVOLOUS LAW SUITS.

Bill of Rights

Yes, I don't know why the American people think that silencing other people's expression of faith and the name of God is a politically correct thing to do. Can someone explain this to me? I learned in grade school that the bill of rights garrauntees the free public expression of faith in God, the pronunciation of name of God, and of His Son Jesus. When did America become so turned around and decieved that it began to believe the opposite?
Why does the media seem agree with this crazy lie when it reports things? Why are the most powerful majority of Americans, the baby boomers who believe and love this country, quiet while our rights are being taken away?

It's time to start standing on the street corners and praying if that's what it takes to re establish freedom in America. We should stand behind every public official who is willing to lead us there.

Pray for water

Thank you Governor Perdue for not being concerned with keeping religion and state separate at a time of desperate need. Everyone should be looking to the lord for relief from the drought. It rained last night in North Georgia, and we have a ninety percent chance of rain again tonight. Keep on praying regardless of what the few critics might say.

Prayer

I commend the Governor for his prayer, if only more politicians would do so! I for one am sick to death of the minority complaining and the government catering to the few over the many!

Like it or not this country was founded on the belief in God, George Washington the father of our country prayed for all to hear and asked God that he would keep the people of this country humble and that they would remember it was God and he alone who had blessed them.

I commend you Governor!

Rain

Thank you Governor Perdue. It rained in Alabama yesterday, and we are hopeful for rain again tonight. Keep the prayers coming. Drought strickened in Alabama.
