kAs a drought of historic proportions dries up the water supply, Georgia's Governor declares a state of emergency and calls on President Bush for help.

Gov. Sonny Perdue says, "We're experiencing the single worst drought in North Georgia's history."

The scene of barren land like this has Governor Sonny Perdue declaring a state of emergency for 85 North Georgia counties.

In fact, some say Lake Lanier, a reservoir that supplies more than 3 million residents with water, is less than 90 days from depletion.

What's equally as bad, Perdue finds, "The corps is sending 3.2 billion gallons of water downstream out of Georgia reservoirs everyday. That's enough to fill 3 and a half sized olympic swimming pools every minute."

Perdue calls the action of the corps of engineers and the fish and wildlife services irresponsible and dangerous.

He filed an injunction Friday to immediately restrict water flows from leaving reservoirs and going to other states.

Perdue says, "They need to understand the harm that comes to Georgia will be upon their hands."

And beyond that, the state wants the President's help, in hopes he'll declare this section of Georgia a major disaster area.

Perdue adds, "We ask him to utilize his power under the endangered species act to prevent catastrophic harm to those both upstream and downstream, human or otherwise."

Lake Lanier's top manager at the US Army Corps of Engineers told Atlanta business leaders Friday that they've been legally required to make water releases but are aware of the impact.

The governor says he is determined to change that.

My family and I are endanger

My family and I are endanger of losing our home because the drought is putting my husband out of business. He owns a Pressure Washing company and had jobs lined up that would get us through the fall and winter and now he can't do them. It seems like the Fed Govt is picking and choosing who gets to remain in business. Car washes are able to stay in business and where exactly is their "recycled" water coming from? Many more foreclosures and bankruptcies are on the horizon because people like my husband dared to run their own business.

I hope this has worked out for your pressure washing company

This is very sad to read. There have been knee jerk reactions by local jurisdictions banning power washing. Luckily there are a few organizations that are gathering steam to make the voice of the business owners heard. I hope you were able to get your cleaning contracting company back on track.

In response to: "If you walk

In response to: "If you walk around Georgia you don't hear anybody complaining about how the Feds are undermining the natural wildlife in the State of Georgia. Not to mention the catastrophic effect on the states economy when we run out of water. Lifes will be lost...Jobs will be lost...and more foreclosures will arise in one of the hardest hit cities in America, which is Atlanta. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!" by " Too complacent"

That is very well said, and very accurate. It is scary to think about what the reprucussions will be of this drought. It is already hurting businesses and putting many landscaping companies) Out Of Business. They are just the first of many businesses that will be affected. It has already been hurting the Pressure Washing businesses due to people not realizing that there are exemptions that allow professional companies to still carry on their daily business. I'm sure it was also hurting the landscaping businesses before the drastic restrictions that have been placed on them. And now many are totally out of business, and I'm afraid other businesses, such as Pressure Washing companies, will be next on the list to be NON-exempt. Does anyone realize what this will do the entire economy! If this sounds like it touches close to home for me, it is because my husband has Pressure Washing company, and I have seen first hand what the drought has done to his business; we've faced almost losing our home, having utilities cut off, and trying to catch up on all the past due bills is agonizing! And I know we are not the only ones who are facing these kinds of things. The more small businesses are hurting, the more it hurts the whole economy due to the reprucussions. It's an extreme dominoe effect!

States rights

When we allowed the Feds the right to control the "PURSE STRINGS" we gave up STATES RIGHTS.How Stupid!!!!!!!

who's Water

It is not the Feds water...and its unconstitutional for the Feds to even have anything to do with the water in Ga. They are nothing but breaking the law...all the time....whats wrong with those people. When do those in Ga. stand up for States rights? Otherwise...nothing but a bunch of cowards that cannot stand up against the illegal fed government.

Sheesh..Whimps.

Water Shortage

The Governor and the State of Georgia have allowed Auto Dealerships and Car Washes to continue to use water unnecessarily all year by washing thousands and thousands of cars. They've allowed water parks like White Water to operate. They've allowed swimming pools all over the state to remain open.

They want their citizens to not water their plants and grass or, wash their vehicles. Now they want us to go dirty by limiting our baths and showers.

Sorry, when they get the whole state on board, I'll get on board.
